Rev. Robert George (Bob) Hartley
Peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday March 21st., 2024 in his 86th year, Bob graduated to his home in Heaven. Beloved husband of Mary Hartley (2023). Dear father of Katherine Ann Rogers-Hartley (Timothy Alan Rogers) and Christine Morton (David Morton). Cherished «Gramps» of Kiernan James, Erika Francine, Nathanael Paul and Peter Joshua. Bob was born Paul Madden to Margaret Melinda Madden (1992). Bob was adopted by Robert & Lilian Hartley in 1937 at 6 weeks of age and raised in British Columbia and Ontario.
Bob completed his undergrad at Queens University in Psychology and his Divinity degree in 1963 at Wycliffe College at U of T. Bob then obtained his Masters in Pastoral Counselling from Boston University in 1966. Bob was Ordained in the diocese of Toronto in 1966 and also married the love of his life, Mary, in 1966. Rev Hartley began his ministry in the Parish of St. Hilda’s Fairbanks in 1963 where he met Mary. Upon ordination he was called to Orillia South the two- point parish of St. Davids and St. Athanasius in 1967. In 1979 he moved his family to St. Paul’s in Lindsay. During his time at St. Paul’s, he and Mary developed their Inner Healing and Listening Prayer Ministry.
Finally in 1990 he became an Associate Priest at Christ Memorial Church in Oshawa. During his time at Christ Memorial, he developed «Renewed Vision Ministry» a charity that focused on providing counseling and church workshops and speaking at conferences. He continued this for the next few decades.
In 1990 he also became the Diocesan Pastoral Ministry Specialist for the Toronto diocese. In 1991 he graduated from the Toronto – Shalom Program in Spiritual Direction. In 1996 he became a clinical member of the Ontario Society of Psychotherapists. Bob was a prolific researcher and writer. He always had a spiritual topic he was working on. Part of his research was put into pocket sized cards on a multitude of everyday spiritual topics. They will be available for you to take home at the funeral. Some of his essays are available online at bobhartleysmusings.wordpress.com .
Bob and Mary went on a number of Missions Trips to Guatemala, Belize and Guyana. On those trips he taught preaching, and equipped the churches, built homes and classrooms, and modeled fatherly love to little children.
Throughout his life he found peace in God’s creation, exploring nature started as a child and continued to his final days. As an adult he and Mary loved canoeing and birdwatching. Together they wrote and illustrated an identification book for local birds. He was also fascinated by ferns, wildflowers and trees. In his retirement he enrolled in forestry courses at Fleming College. He passionately tended his Maple Sugar Bush and the Community Forest across the road from the farm.
