On May 27th, 1934, Rebecca Catherine (Beckey) MacInnis was given the gift of life, and on January 7th, 2023, at the age of 88 surrounded by her loved ones, she gave it back over to the God she loved and trusted, having used it to the fullest.
Mom was born and raised in Point Tupper, NS. After marriage and many military postings, she and our dad, Alex Hughie eventually settled to raise their large family in Kingsville, Cape Breton.
Those of us who loved her dearest were fortunate to call her Mom, Nana, Great-Nana, Sister, Aunt, and friend.
With her open heart and generous spirit, many will remember her as a community grandmother known for her deliveries of small gifts throughout the neighborhood on every special occasion.
She was the backbone of our family. Her ability to listen and offer an objective opinion was a gift we tapped into many times throughout our lives and will deeply miss. She faced adversity with a strong faith, setting an example for us to believe we, too, could overcome anything.
There are too many chapters of Moms story to share here but suffice to say she had a wonderful wit, an adventurous spirit and was open to trying new things and seeing new places. She fulfilled a dream of visiting Scotland and promptly kissed the ground when she stepped onto the Isle of Barra. She counted 40 shades of green while in Ireland, enjoyed the sun in Antiqua and took her first visit to Disney World at age 85. Oh, but the miles Mom could get from a new pair of sneakers.
She is survived by eight children, Margie (Roger) Harrison, Cathy MacInnis, Murreen (Joe) Simms, Dannie (Sheila), Donnie (Nancy), Cecilia (Robert) Bell, Sandy (Brenda), Mary Anne (Brian) MacIntyre and son-in-law David Ellig.
Siblings; Michael (Margaret) MacNeil, Eileen (William) MacLeod, Raymond (Anita) MacNeil, and Sister Cecilia MacNeil along with many nieces and nephews. Nana will be forever loved and missed by her 17 surviving Grandchildren, 22 Great-Grandchildren (with another on the way) and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren.
Beckey was predeceased & is now reunited with her husband Alex Hughie MacInnis, eldest daughter Mary Pat Ellig, her parents Jerome (Hiley) and Mary Ann (MacDonald) MacNeil, siblings Rose Marie Caron, Wilfred MacDonald and Alice, Alexander, and Rose in infancy. Grandsons, Morgan, and Logan Macintyre will be waiting to greet her with a huge hug. We’re envisioning a joyous reunion.
The family would like to express our deep gratitude to Dr. Pluta, Dr. DesRoches, Dr. Cooper, Kyla, and the staff of the Strait Richmond Hospital for their excellent care. Thank you to the homecare team that treated Mom with such compassion. Special thank you to her daughter and son-in-law Murreen and Joe Simms who opened their home and allowed for Mom to live and be cared for with the comforts of home.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 10th, 2023, at Greens Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, January 11th, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Glendale, Cape Breton, with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Greens Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Family flowers only please. Donations in Beckey’s memory may be made to the Glendale and Area Community Cooperative or a charity of your choice.
