It is with heavy hearts that the families of Raymond Harvey Broughton announce his passing at the new long term care facility, in Corner Brook, NL, on Sunday, November 10th, 2024, at the age of 88 years.
Raymond was predeceased by his parents Hector and Florence Broughton of Brigus, his wife Daphne Bertha Broughton (nee Whiffen), daughter Sandra Ruth Cumby (nee Broughton), and son Paul Terrance Broughton
Left to mourn are his 3 sons Perry (Mary-Ann), Peter (Cindy), and Scott (Krista), brother Ken (Evelynn), and Sister Sybil Gushue (nee Broughton). Grandkids Amanda Cumby, David Cumby, Beverly Broughton, Kali Broughton, Raelene Broughton, Regan Broughton-Lake, Tyler Broughton, Aubrianna Broughton, Kennedy Broughton, and Jonah Broughton along with 8 great grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Ray grew up in Brigus, NL and later went to school in St. John’s starting his career as a wireless radio operator. Ray later met his wife Daphne in Bonavista during the late 1950’s and moved to Howley in 1972 where he would settle to raise his family of 5, moving on to complete 35 years of public service working as an electronics technician with the Department of Transportation out of the Deer Lake Airport.
Ray had several passions in life which included all aspects of the outdoors, bear hunting out of Bluegrass Brook, snaring rabbits every fall at Wetstone Point, fishing and boating on Grand Lake as well as driving fancy cars. Anyone who had the opportunity to meet and speak with him could easily see his outgoing and hard-working nature. Although he was private, he really enjoyed meeting new people and sharing stories with people from all over. He never passed up the opportunity to chat nor miss an opportunity to display his keen sense of humor. Ray also had a major love for hockey. He took his hockey very seriously and if he wasn’t playing it, he could be found watching from behind the glass at the Hodder Memorial Stadium in Deer Lake or from the stands at the Civic Center in Corner Brook, and other various arenas throughout the province.
During and after his time with the DOT, he started several businesses. Firstly, Grand Lake Campground which he managed for many years before retiring from the DOT and starting Ray’s Hunting & Fishing Lodge Ltd. in 1991. He also started up Executive Limousine Services. All of these ventures spun from his life passions, and he enjoyed each to the fullest. Ray was never afraid to take chances in life, he gave it all to anything he attempted in life. One of his favorite sayings was “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space!”
After living in Howley for over 50 years, he moved to the new Western Long-term Care facility in Corner Brook where he spent his final 2 years of his life.
In keeping with Ray’s wishes cremation will take place with no services at this time. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
