Ray Edward McNeil “Papaw” – age 93 of North Knoxville went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, while surrounded by family. As a young man, Ray served in the US Army and then began his career as a truck driver. He started delivering milk for French Broad Dairy, then hauling livestock, and then moved on to drive for Levi Strauss from which he retired. In his retirement, he worked on carpentry jobs, enjoyed many RV trips, NASCAR races and showing his own car in numerous car shows throughout the years.
When he passed, Ray was greeted in heaven by his parents, William “Bill” and Fannie McNeil; brothers, Robert “Buck” McNeil and twin brother, Roy McNeil; sister, Irene McNeil Owens; loving wife of 43 years, Delores Doane McNeil; son, Wayne Doane; and son-in-law, George Blankenship.
Those left to cherish his memory include sons, Doug (Becky) McNeil, Phil (Denise) McNeil; daughters, Susan McNeil Newberry and Donna Doane Blankenship; daughter-in-law, Joyce Doane; 15 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Beaty McNeil; and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Lisa Buford and Kim Young.
The family will receive friends 1:00-3:00 PM on Sunday, January 22, 2023, at Bridges Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 3:00 PM with Rev. Brad Griffey officiating. Family and friends will meet 10:45 AM on Monday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for an 11:00 AM interment. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Matthew Newberry, Russell McNeil, Scott Blankenship, Austin Smith, Jon Doane, and Steven Newberry.
