Obituary
Rand Tyler Stevenson, beloved husband of Mary Katherine (Mary Kay) Stevenson of Raymond Alberta passed away suddenly at home on Thursday November 2, 2023 at the age of 71. He was the loving father of Mary Janelle Wight (Andrew) of Victoria B.C. Sean Tyler of Gilbert Arizona, Scott Daniel (Jenna) of Edmonton AB, and Dale Ross (Laura) of Raymond AB. Rand always thought that he was additionally blessed as he had 10 grandchildren who he took such a delight in. Kaylen, Brylee, Chase, Callie (Wight -Victoria B.C). Adalyn, Belle, Harlow, (Stevenson- Arizona). Sadie, Jace (Stevenson- Edmonton). Rose (Stevenson- Raymond). Rand was also survived by his brother Scott Stafford Stevenson. Rand was predeceased by his father Daniel Tennyson Stevenson and his mother Emily Ruth (Bregman) Stevenson. As Rand would say, what follows is “the life” times of Rand Tyler Stevenson.
Rand was born on September 11th, 1952 in the city of Toronto Ontario. He lived in downtown Toronto, his first home was 315 Roxton Road. He attended Dewson public school for grades K-6 and Kent junior high grades 7-8. For High school he attended Bloor Collegiate Institute grades 9-13. He encountered many bullies and perhaps that is when his interest in martial arts began. Through the years, he pursued his interest in martial arts by achieving various black belts in several different styles, and ranged in degrees from first to seventh which was in Karate. He was also proficient in various other martial arts including but not limited to: jujitsu, kendo, hapkido, and taekwondo.
Rand attended the University of Waterloo studying Kinesiology as his focus but found this was not the path for him. He was recruited by the Ontario Police College as a civilian contractor training the cadets, because of his abilities in martial arts and proficiency in firearms. He enjoyed his time so much at the academy that he decided to join as cadet and graduated in the class of 1977. He was proud to be a drill instructor and lead the formation in ceremonies. After his policing career, he moved out to Calgary where he worked in the counter terrorism department for Nova protecting the pipelines and executives from vandalism and threats. Rand always had the desire and drive to create his own path in life and this is where his journey of entrepreneurism began. He opened gun retail store called “the magazine shop” and ran that for a few years. He later opened a bullet manufacturing facility in Raymond that specialized in high grade ammunitions that were sold to the Canadian military and police departments. He had many other ideas and ventures throughout his career but ultimately spent most of his time and efforts pursuing his passion project oversees. Rand was not able to complete this project during his life, but we know he believed in it with all his heart, and this is why he pursued it to the end.
When Rand arrived in Calgary he boarded his dogs in a kennel ran by Milt Taylor. He noticed that Milt was an upstanding individual and liked how he ran things so he asked what made him different. Milt told him that he would like to introduce him to 2 young men, they were missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rand felt that what they had to say made sense so he was baptized May 1979. He was honored to serve as a bodyguard to President Ezra Taft Benson, when the Prophet came to the Calgary Saddledome. He was an active member and had a testimony of our Savior throughout his life in the church.
In the Fall of 1979 he met his wife to be, Mary Kay, at a young adult activity at church and she was on his mind from then on. They were married September 4th 1980 in Calgary then sealed for time and all eternity in the Cardston temple on October 6th, 2006. His family was his treasure and he took delight in watching his children grow up and become upstanding individuals. Rand always considered his family to be his greatest accomplishment in life. He was always loyal to his family and friends…. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 8th, 2023, at the Raymond Stake Center, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (2 N 200 W).
