We, the family of the late Rance Ryan are heartbroken to announce his passing on 5 November 2023 at the Bonavista Hospital.
Leaving to morn, with his many wonderful memories, are his wife of 63 years, Shirley (Phillips) whom he called darling, sons Larry and Glen (Janette), sister Maisie White of Newman’s Cove and Family, sister-in-law Beryl (Gus) of Deer Lake and family.
He is pre-deceased by his mother Margaret Ryan of Newman’s Cove. His loving Aunt and Uncle, Harold and Selena (Ryan) Abbott (Bonavista) who raised him as their own son. His father and mother-in-law Samuel and Dorcas (Tucker) Phillips and brother-in law Harry Phillips (Bonavista).
Rance was loving, kind, and generous and was a man of few words. He had two loves in life: his family and his love for his Lord.
He was not a man afraid of hard work. This was obvious through the careers he had throughout his life. He started working at the tender age of 9 at the Bonavista fish plant. From there he became a heavy truck driver who put one of the first loads of gravel (if not the very first) on the Terra Nova Park highway development. From there he transitioned to becoming a heavy duty mechanic for various highway construction companies.
As his children became older, he decided it was time to come home in order to spend more time with his family. So he became a fisherman and there was a no happier man than he was when he was on the water.
Then upon retirement he and his “Darling” spent a number of years RVing. They enjoyed seeing new and exciting places along with their son Larry. He also loved spending time with his son Glen and daughter-in-law Janette through numerous visits. Family time was important to him and we are so lucky to have these treasured memories.
Thanks to all who cared for him during his short illness: the staffs of the Bonavista Hospital, The Health Science Center (St. John’s), the Bonavista Retirement Home and the Personal Care Team for Larry whom all have shown such care and concern during this challenging time.
We will miss your presence and love in our daily lives.
Flower arrangements will be gratefully accepted or, in lieu, donations to the Canadian Cancer society.
