In the early morning of April 1 2023 this gracious, gentle and kind hearted lady passed away.
Phyllis knew that relationships are about connection and belonging, she made sure you felt like you were a valuable part of her life.
Phyllis was kind to everyone, she believed in unconditional love and support and gave this to her family and friends and pets.
Phyllis was born in Victoria BC to Eric and Kathleen Gale where she started her life on Langford Lake. Following her family in her late teens to California. Working in Radiology and generally having a pretty good time whenever possible.
I heard great stories about her growing up with her siblings and all the funny things that happened as well as the not so funny.
Later on in life with her second husband Jiri they moved to many places; Duncan, Millbay, Penticton and Kimberley where they spent many years until permanently moving back to the island. Phyllis worked as a Nursing unit assistant at RJH for many years and enjoyed her friendships there.
Mom made many longstanding friendships wherever she was and kept them.
Whether baking her gingerbread cookies, cinnamon loaves, or casseroles for those that needed some warmth at a difficult time in their lives she was a natural caregiver. Making you feel significant and heard was her specialty. Spending time with her grandchildren for overnights and driving them to and fro. They were her passion.
Having Parksville holidays by the sea, reading a good book or having a heart to heart with someone who needed her. Phyllis loved her neighbours in Royal Oak, visiting on her walks with Cocoa then Zoey.
Phyllis believed simple pleasures to be a healthy refuge in a complex world.
Predeceased by her son Eric Budgell in 1990 who she courageously lived without.
Also, her dear friend and sister in law Kathy Gale, oldest school friend Connie Lamont and friend Gayle Butler from Kimberley.
Left to mourn her is her husband of 47 years Jiri Hubacek, daughter Roslyn Thomas), grandchildren Liam (Megan) Phoebe (Dylan) great grandchildren, Juno and Minka.
Her devoted brother Dave, (Julie) brother Mike (Regina) as well as sisters Ann and Lorilee (Ruda).
Phyllis shared a close bond with her niece Susie who was there to help and cut her hair in long term care. Much loved nieces; Michele and Sharon, Leslie, Laurie and many more not named here.
“Her absence is like the sky spread over everything”
A celebration of Phyllis’s life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Phyllis’s charity of choice The Firefighters Burn Fund in Victoria BC. firefightersburnfundvictoria.ca/
