Hartnell, Phillip Scott
Passed away peacefully at Emmanuel House on August 25th, 2024, at the age of 63, after a long and courageous battle with mesothelioma.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Linda Hartnell (née Desmarais), who was his steadfast partner and the love of his life. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. Phil was the proud father of his three sons, affectionately known as the “three lucky brothers”: Kurtis (Amanda), Calvin (Tori), and Quincy (Patricia). He was a cherished “Buppa” to his grandchildren, Noah, Eric, Lucy, Henry, and a baby girl soon to arrive, leaving behind a legacy of love that will be felt for generations.
Born to William and Bonnie Hartnell, Phil was a beloved sibling to Stephen, Paul, Stuart (Jennifer), Leslie (Martin), and Louise (Chris). He was also a dear brother-in-law to Gisèle, Claude (Hannah), and Donald (Pam), and a much-loved uncle to many nieces and nephews. Phil is predeceased by his in-laws, Jean Félix & Edith Desmarais and his brother, Paul Hartnell. Phil is also fondly remembered by his lifelong friend from high school, Bill Young, a loyal friend until the end. He was also deeply loved by his protective dog, Keira, whose companionship brought him great happiness and comfort.
Above all, Phil’s life was defined by his unwavering commitment to his family and his profound love for those closest to him. He never failed to provide the love and support needed for them to reach their highest potential. Phil embodied values of love, dedication, and compassion, always putting his family first and approaching every endeavour with staunch determination. He took immense pride in his family’s achievements and found his greatest joy in watching them grow and reach new milestones.
His life was marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence. He approached every project with unmatched passion and tireless effort. His hands were rarely still, always engaged in creating—from constructing massive structures and crafting beautiful pieces of art to solving complex puzzles and building intricate miniature models with his meticulous eye for detail.
His life was rich and varied, with passions that included being an outdoorsman, survivalist, gardener, and wonderful cook for his family. Phil was widely admired for his intricate craftsmanship in wood, leather, and metalworking. His work was driven not by a desire for fame or recognition, but by his passion for bringing his innovative ideas to life and his dedication to creating something truly special. He had a deep fascination with all life had to offer, nothing was off limits.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all of their neighbours in both Tiverton and Hamilton for all of their contributions and ongoing help during this difficult time, the Juravinski Cancer Clinic Medical Team, St. Joseph’s Firestone Clinic Medical Team, Family Doctor Dr. Steven Hadcock, the nurses and PSWs, and the staff at Emmanuel House Hospice (Good Shepherd) for their compassionate care and support.
Phil’s journey through life was one of love, passion, and adventure. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends and in the many works of art and memories he leaves behind. He will be remembered always for his warmth, spirit, and profound love for his family.
