Peter Anthony Batchelor Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Batchelor, a longtime resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the age of 79 years.
Peter Anthony Batchelor was born on October 4, 1944, in Lewes, Sus, England. The son of Canadian Army Sergeant Don Batchelor and his wife, British war bride, Gwen Upton. In July 1946, Peter and his mother travelled to Halifax on board the Queen Mary and then by train to join his father, now a Canada Customs Officer on the US border in Manitoba.
Peter grew up and went to school in Gretna, Manitoba. He was the eldest of six children known as the six p’s. They are Peter, Paul, Pam, Pat, Penny and Perry.
In 1963, Peter left school and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, training to become a fire fighter. He served in many fire halls at Canadian military bases in Canada and Germany.
In 1966, Peter married his high school classmate Esther Linda Friesen. Daughter Kimberly Joy was born while stationed in Gimli, Manitoba and son Keith Winston, four years later. In 1970 Peter was transferred to Germany and the young family accompanied him. For three years, the family lived in a small German village while Peter commuted to work. While there, they spent many happy days with the local German residents and managed to tour parts of Europe, including his birthplace, England.
In 1983 Peter left the air force and joined the Dawson Creek Fire Department and the Airport Division Chief. In 1986 he was promoted to City Fire Chief and retired to leisure life in 2005. While living in Dawson Creek, the family became involved with the community. Peter spent a lot of time involved in sports, especially golf and curling. He also served on many executive boards and president of Legion Branch 141 and the Dawson Creek Golf and Country Club.
Peter is survived by his loving wife Esther, daughter Kim (Gary), son Keith (Angela), grandsons Anthony, Jared, Owen, Zack, Brody; great grandsons Rustyn and Rylan and great granddaughter Ophelia; as well as many extended family and friends.
