Obituary
Pearl Gurski, beloved wife of the late John Gurski, passed away at the Preeceville and District Health Centre on February 26, 2023, at the age of 86 years.
Pearl was born in Stenen, SK, on November 19, 1936, to William and Anne (nee Steranko) Kowalchuk. Her family lived on the farm north of Stenen. Being the first born, Pearl had to work hard on the farm with everything, including cooking, milking cows, feeding animals, gardening and working in the fields, all while completing her grade 8 education at Frame Lake school. They soon added to their family including Peter, Eileen, Michael, June, and Marianne. Pearl’s duties expanded to include helping raise her younger siblings. Additionally, while still living at home, Pearl would cook for threshing crews to earn extra money and honed her skills to cook for groups.
Pearl married John Gurski on September 20, 1953. They moved to their own farm north of Stenen. Pearl became a member of the St. Demetrius Orthodox Church in Stenen, where she was a proud member of the choir and the church ladies auxiliary, spending countless hours cooking for church member family’s weddings, curling bonspiels and funerals. Pearl also was asked to be the main cook at numerous community weddings, which she enjoyed immensely. One of her passions, which were many, was growing
a huge garden. She took pride in tending to her vegetable garden, rows as straight as an arrow, and not a weed to be found. Growing flowers, was another passion. She loved to see the colors come to life as she put them in pots or in her planters. Baking, she loved anything to do with yeast from the first start of dough to the end result, she took pride in her ability to ensure
everything she was making was the same size. She was famous for her buns. It didn’t matter what she baked or cooked, making each one perfectly was important to her. Same with quilting, another passion, each stitch was done with care, all the same size, always ensuring the end result was perfection.
Pearl and John spent many hours hosting card parties, ice fishing, visiting friends and dancing, and they attended many barn dances in their day. They travelled the province, proudly teaching both dancing and pattern dancing, as they graciously shared their talents with others, young and old. In 2014, they were awarded lifetime membership in the Saskatchewan Pattern Dance Association for all their efforts.
Pearl will be remembered and dearly missed by all of those who knew and loved her throughout her 86 years.
Pearl was predeceased by her husband, John; her parents, William and Anne; siblings, June and Marianne (in infancy); daughter, Terry Lynn (in infancy); and great grandson, Evan Froese.
She is survived by her children: Andy (Marg), Rick (Vanessa), and Donna (Rob); grandchildren: Tammy (Dave) Froese, Lisa (Steve) Harris, Rebekka (Ellis) Kempton, Jessica Gurski (Jordan), Danielle Gurski (Tristen), and Eric Aaserude; great-grandchildren: Hannah (Dominic) Hassan, Alexa, Sienna, Luca Froese; Ella, Melayna, and Corben Harris, Ryker and Kylie Kempton and Jaxton Koopman; brothers, Peter (Anna) and Michael Kowalchuk; and her sister, Eileen (Ken) Garlough; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 4, 2023, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Michael Faryna officiating.
