McCannell, Pauline Elenor (nee Neil)
September 8, 1922 – February 17, 2024
Peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the graceful age of 101. Beloved wife of Kenneth Gilbert (2013). Dear mother of Neil (2022) (Ruby) of Orangeville, Donna-Dale Jones (Rev. Doug) of St. Catharines and Mark (Tracy) of Hopeville. Cherished grandmother of Paul McCannell (Stephanie), Cheryel Harvey (Kevin), Rob McCannell (Missy), Bryn Jones (Lindsay), Holly Jones, Paula-Jane Lamb (Michael), Tammy McCannell (Ethan Henry), Anna McCannell (Rob Bakos), Charlie McCannell (Jodi). Loving great-grandmother of Ashley, Ryan, Michael, Lauren, Declan, Calum, William, Cecilia, Theodore, Foster, Sullivan and Margot. Predeceased by her sister Marjorie Young and her brothers, Lloyd, Ted and Jack Neil.
Pauline was raised on the family farm near Alton. Her dad nicknamed her ‘Toots’. Pauline and Ken were married in 1945, and for 33 years, farmed the land that is now the location of the Headwaters Health Care Centre. Family was most important to her, both immediate and extended with annual family reunions for years. Pauline was a founding and life member of the Rosehill Women’s Institute and a long-time member of Westminster United Church. She dedicated her life to contributing greatly to her community and neighbourhood while thoroughly enjoying it. She had fun! In her younger years she delighted in attending weekend dances and was always ready to hit the dance floor with anyone who wanted to go for a spin. Pauline actively participated in curling and bowling until she relocated to town, where she took up bridge and ceramics. Excelling at lawn bowling she secured several senior championships. Not limited to sports Pauline engaged in euchre with neighbourhood friends and at the Seniors Centre. However, her true passion lay in playing cards with her Thursday Ladies Bridge group. Beyond the card games they shared celebrations, marked senior milestones and relished in dressing up for special occasions throughout the calendar year. In 2015 Pauline moved to St. Catharines where she continued to be an avid reader and participant in group activities.
Special appreciation goes to the staff at Linhaven Home, particularly those on the Dalhousie unit, for their unwavering care and love for Pauline over these past eight years. Her presence will be dearly missed.
Memorial visitation-reception will be held at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First St., Orangeville on Friday, March 1, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Words of Remembrance will begin at 1:30 pm. A private family graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
