It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Paula Marie MacLean (nee LaRammée). She left us suddenly, yet peacefully, at home in her sleep on April 13th, 2024. Paula was the daughter of the late Guy and the late Anne Margaret LaRamée. She was born in Toronto in 1954 but spent the majority of her upbringing in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Inspired by her father’s service in the Canadian Air Force and Navy, from a young age, Paula had an adventurous spark and a life-long love of travel.
Paula met the love of her life, Frank, while spending summers in Creignish, Cape Breton with her parents and her six siblings Marie-Anne (Ivan) Toronto, the late Inez, Celeste (Bill) Florida, the late Stephen, Nicole (Henrik) Dartmouth and Leone (Ken) Dartmouth. Her summers were also filled with time spent with the MacMaster family and her extended “Sheumais” family on Creignish Rear. After graduating from Dartmouth High School, she began to follow her passion for photography, working alongside Sherman Hines as an assistant. After studying for her LPN she graduated in 1974. Later on, she began drafting at CRVS (Nautical Institute) in Port Hawkesbury. Yet she never gave up her passion for photography, drafting, drawing, cooking and gardening.
When Paula and Frank decided to settle in Long Point, Cape Breton at the “old farm house”, they got married on December 14, 1974. Together they created a loving and nurturing home where they raised their five children: Kelly (Raúl), Port Hawkesbury; Cheryl (Adrian),Toronto; Garrett (Sable), Toronto; Kirk (Lynsee), Long Point; and Keane, Long Point. In addition to her husband and five children, she is survived by six grandchildren: Ronan, Fiona, Cosima, Cadence, Alistair and Elsie. Paula was a mother extraordinaire; always ready to lend support or find anything you need somewhere in her purse. She was in fact a mother and grandmother to many, for she was always ready and willing to offer motherly advice to anyone, including her children’s friends, her nieces and nephews, her extended family and even total strangers! And she was not afraid of engaging in deep conversations with strangers in passing.
Paula extended herself to all in her role as a wife, sister, mother, grandmother, sister in-law, aunt, cousin, neighbour or friend. She cared deeply for her nieces and nephews through marriage, always remembering to acknowledge birthdays and special occasions for (Lindsay, Adele, Michelle, Natalie, Mark, Marisa, Sasha, Jarrett, Beth, Eric, Ashley, Kevin, and Samuel).
Paula had a zest for life and adventure, and was always up for a good time. She rarely missed a good party. Indeed, she loved inviting people over to the old farm house just so she could practice her amazing hospitality skills. Tea and home-baked goodies were soon on the table for anyone who walked into her kitchen.
She dearly loved all her nieces (Shanda, Jennifer, Adrienne, Julia and Andrea) and nephews (Nicholas, Brendan, Logan, Cameron and Adam); sister- in-laws HelenAnn (Gordon) Long Point; the late Yvonne (Richard) Long Point; Kathleen of Long Point; Marie (Dave) Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont; Sarah (Jere) Whitecourt; and brother- in- laws Hugh, St. Paul, MN; Winston, Chillawack, BC; Richard, Long Point; Gerry, Calgary; and Stanley (Jessica) Daegu, S. Korea.
In remembering her, we appreciate Paula’s favourite refrain of The Beatles,»Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da….Life Goes On.”
Visitation to take place at Green’s Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury, NS on Thursday, April 18th 7-9pm; Friday, April 19th 2-4pm & 7-9pm. Funeral will be held at Judique Parish Saturday, April 20th at 11:00am. Burial to take place at a later date. Family flowers only please. Donations can be made to the Judique Parish Cemetery fund or charity of choice.
