Paula Jean Dodaro
1943-2024
Paula Jean
Dodaro
April 12, 1943
– July 10, 2024
We said goodbye to our
dear, sweet Paula on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. She passed peacefully
surrounded by her favourite artwork, pictures of her many precious
Siamese cats, and with her close friends regaling stories of camping,
cooking, and hiking.
Paula was a teacher by
profession and by passion. Both in the United States and Nova Scotia
she taught thousands of children not only reading, writing, and math,
but respect, kindness, and how to have confidence in themselves. She
shared freely the knowledge she had of so many things: nature, birds,
gardening, cooking, books, music, Suduko…. She was a wealth
of information and never stopped investigating and sharing new and
quirky things about the world around her.
Paula was known as an
avid and giving gardener. Within a single season she could transform a
dried-out plot of lawn to an oasis of flowers and shrubs. She was
constantly evolving her gardens, so it was never a surprise to have
her arrive at your house with plastic bags of sub-divided plants.
Countless gardens from Bear River to Halifax and beyond have treasures
that first sprouted decades ago under Paula’s
watch.
An incredible cook,
Paula loved to host her friends for dinner; many people remember her
famous Christmas Eve potlucks! She was known for her incredible
breads, including her famous zucchini sandwich bread; a recipe none of
us has been able to master despite all her coaching. Her unique
recipes are undoubtedly found scratched on napkins and the back of old
phone bills across the continent!
Paula was a lover of
animals; she had many pairs of Siamese cats over the years, but also
befriended (and tamed) many-a-feral cat along the way. She had
bird-friends of all types from the crow she tamed as a young woman, to
those she fed and came to anticipate her peanuts on daily walks in
Bridgetown. In nature, she was never more happy than when she was
sitting on a shoreline, binoculars in hand, counting shorebirds or
sitting in a bog investigating tiny orchids. She was an active
volunteer and advocate with Nature Conservancy efforts including the
Keji Owl and Bon Portage bird counts. One of her most sacred places
was Brier Island at the far end of Nova Scotia where she spent many
camping/hiking trips with her friends. Memories of these trips
provided her with much happiness and laughter in her last
days.
Paula and her loved
ones are so appreciative of the incredible support she received from
her care team, especially those at Saunders Rest Home in Bridgetown,
and more recently the incredible nursing staff and doctors at Valley
Regional Hospital in Kentville.
Arrangements have been
entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville. At Paula’s request there will be no formal
service. Instead, her friends ask that you raise a glass of wine, Gin
& Tonic, or beverage of your choice to a life well-lived! If
you want to make a donation, please consider a charity that honours
Paula’s many passions, and puts forth positivity into the
world. This would be the best tribute one could make to a
one-of-a-kind woman!
