Obituary
Patrick James Cashin, P. Eng
North Sydney
It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Patrick James Cashin on Monday, May 29th, 2023, at home, surrounded by the love of his wife Monique, daughter Bridget Claire, and mom Heather, just as he wanted.
Pat was born to Heather (Neil) and Kevin Cashin on October 28, 1975 in North Sydney, NS. It is said that Dr. Bell held the newborn boy high in the air exclaiming, “now that is how you have a baby!” They named him Patrick James, a strong Irish Catholic name, honouring both grandfathers and his own dad, his namesake.
Two beautiful families had a hand in raising Patrick and what a stellar job they did. His days were filled with the love of his aunts and uncles and his beloved Nanny and Poppy Cashin. Pat’s first friends were his Neil cousins, a gang of 10 who shared holidays, traditions, a love of torturing family members at their annual Christmas gathering and time spent together in Midgey’s backyard, enjoying the home-brew. Time with the Cashins was spent in Boisdale at Nanny and Poppy’s cabin and later, at Cashin family reunions. The cousins had an unbreakable bond and Patrick will be so deeply missed by those who were ever present in his early years.
Pat’s childhood was fairly standard for a North Sydney lad growing up in the 80’s. Hours were spent outside playing road hockey and making go-carts with friends. When it came to friends, Pat had the best, and he cherished them deeply, until the very end. “The boys” were as solid a group as one could find. They had ‘The Barn’, a refuge at the top of Gisborne Street where cards were played, plans were hatched and for some, hearts were broken and Ol’ Blue Eyes was at the centre of it all.
Pat never claimed to be a great student, he was a seasoned critic of formal education, but he did do well in math and was a naturally gifted writer. He attended Dalhousie University, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil). He received his coveted iron ring from his uncles Sean and Scott, a moment of great pride for Pat and his dad. He then began full-time work with ACRES (now Hatch), which despite many name changes over the years, was the only place Pat chose to use his rubber stamp.
Pat’s friendships spanned decades and his circle of friends evolved as he entered adulthood. Countless hours were spent tossing back pints at Rollie’s after work, sharing stories, laughs & inside jokes. From this camaraderie, The Kimball-Brogan Jungle Cats were born, a short-lived baseball team that will live in infamy in the minds of its stellar roster. They were the epitome of what it meant to be young and carefree.
Around this time, Pat met his match in Monique Howell, a true Florence girl. They had many things in common; both were driven, strong-willed and loved to laugh and socialize with their friends. The deal was sealed with a quick kiss on the steps of the church where they would later marry and baptize their daughter. It was further set in stone with a daytime dance to their eventual wedding song “Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain” in front of a crowd of onlookers on Indian Beach. When their cherished Bridget Claire came along, we all saw a softer side of Pat Cashin. He always had a way with kids and he was a natural as a dad.
Together, the Cashins settled into a comfortable life in their little white house on Caledonia Street. Bridget Claire is the perfect mix of her parents and as a family, they share a love of music, thrifting for vintage clothes and vinyl and time spent playing board games at their cottage on the George’s River. Nightly family dinner at the table is a given in the Cashin household followed by Jeopardy and a contestant play by play with Penny and the feline misfits underfoot.
Pat thrived on routine in recent years and despite his illness, lived a life of hard work and devotion to his girls. When he knew his time was short, he was determined to soldier on without complaint. To say Pat fought the good fight is an understatement. With Monique and Bridget Claire by his side, Pat forged the way for others by participating in clinical trials, one after the other, showing others new and innovative ways to live with stage IV cancer and fight any battle thrown their way. His legacy will live on in the many patients he has helped and who he continues to help as they benefit from the ever-changing precision medicine of today.
Pat is survived by his wife Monique, daughter Bridget Claire and mom Heather. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Eleanor Howell (McGean), brother-in-law Gordie and nephews Kyle and Sean. He will be so sorely missed by his aunts and uncles from the Cashin and Neil families; The Cashins – Brian (Suzanne), Sean (Gail), Theresa (Randy) Seward, Clare (David) Grant, Brenda (Stephen) Howard, Joan (Scott) Hatcher, Heather Boutilier (nee Cashin), and The Neil’s – Wayne (Linda), David “Midge” (Wendy), Judy (Robert) Hardy, Dennis (Hope), Gary Neil, Sheila (Neil) Jackson, Peggy and George Neil.
Pat was predeceased by his father Kevin Patrick Cashin, paternal grandparents Lloyd and Elizabeth (MacNeil) Cashin, maternal grandparents Jim and Alma (Billard) Neil, uncle James (Jimmy) Neil, infant Nancy Neil, infant Lloyd Cashin as well as the coolest uncle, Kirk Boutilier.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held at the Northern Yacht Club on Seaview Drive from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, June 3rd, 2023. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers, we have created a memorial bursary in Pat’s name which will be awarded annually to a graduating Memorial High School student. Donations can be made to the bursary at gofund.me/e3652f6b or to the Tom MacNeil Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Online Condolences may be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
Let’s drink to the hard working people
Let’s drink to the lowly of birth
Raise your glass to the good and the evil
Let’s drink to the salt of the earth
Pat, you were as salt of the earth as they come, you will be so missed and forever loved.
