Obituary of Patricia Anne Kowal
Peacefully on February 15, 2024 in Palliative Care at St. Boniface Hospital, Patricia Kowal at the age of 88 years.
Patricia was predeceased by her husband William, 13 years earlier on February 15, 2011; her parents Doris and Frank Cancilla; sister and brother-in-law Maureen and Ron Johnstone; and her husband’s parents and siblings. She is survived by her children Cynthia, Valerie Regan, Teresa Anderlic (Jernej), Ronald (Neal Wilson), and Richard; grandchildren Calvin, Sharla, and Kira Regan, Jared and Rebecca Anderlic and Thomas Enns; and nieces Laureen Johnstone Unruh, Gail Johnstone and Lianne Johnstone Milas and their families.
Mom, Grannie, or Pat as she was known to all, was born May 11, 1935 at the old Grace Hospital on her sister’s 2nd birthday. She was raised in the West End of Winnipeg, attending Mulvey School, and Gordon Bell High School. Upon graduating, Pat went to work at Eaton’s Sales Office, where she met Bill, marrying 2 years later in 1954. After a short stay in an apartment in downtown Winnipeg, they bought the only home the family would share, in East Kildonan, where they raised their 5 children. Once all of their children had reached school age, Pat began work at Neil Campbell School where she spent many happy and enjoyable years and made many enduring friendships.
Summers were a special time, and early on were spent at a variety of locals around the province. Eventually settling on Victoria Beach in 1973, Pat and Bill enjoyed many summers at the cottage with family, friends and guests, creating lasting memories. Sundays at home were family days – with Mom at the helm, pasta dinners almost a certainty, and instructions that if you were passing through the kitchen – stir the spaghetti sauce!
Pat’s legacy is many faceted. Children and adults alike felt immediately comfortable in her presence, and experienced her kindness, creativity and confidence. People often and fondly remarked on what a great listener she was. She was a lifelong caregiver, supporting family, friends and neighbours with empathy, respect and the gift of her time. In later years she overcame many health challenges, allowing her to remain independent and supportive of others. She is already missed by many.
Pat has requested no commemorative service be held. Cremation, and a private family interment at Assumption Cemetery have taken place.
If friends so desire, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
