Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Patricia Skibinsky on October 2, 2024, at the age of 62. Born on March 19, 1962, in Leroy, Saskatchewan, Patricia made a small but mighty entrance into the world, weighing just one and a half pounds. Her mother, Mary, often shared stories of how Patricia fit into the palm of her hand, a testament to her strength and resilience.
Patricia began her education in Sinnett, Saskatchewan, where she attended school from kindergarten through grade 3, guided by the Sisters of the Service. She later moved on to Lanigan Composite High School, where she thrived, participating in the Air Cadets and volunteering as a Candy Striper at the local hospital. These early experiences instilled in her a deep sense of compassion and service.
Patricia’s journey after graduating in 1980 showcases her resilience and adaptability. While she dreamed of becoming a nurse, life led her down a different path filled with diverse experiences. She started in the service industry at Restaurant 543 along the Alaskan Highway, where she developed her skills in hospitality, and then perfected her craftsmanship at Tisdale Upholstery. Her next roles as a cashier at Preeceville IGA and later as a waitress at Crispy’s Chicken and the Lunn Hotel showcased her ability to connect with people and provide excellent service. Patricia’s dedication continued at the Gateway Motel, where her meticulous attention to detail shone through in her housekeeping work. She ultimately concluded her career at Good Spirit, leaving a legacy of hard work and commitment.
However, her most cherished role was that of a wife and mother. For 37 years, Patricia and her common-law partner, Michael Skibinsky, shared a profound and unwavering bond. Their love and loyalty to one another were evident to all, navigating life’s challenges together.
Patricia’s kindness was legendary. She loved driving the Saskatchewan grid roads, often with her favorite music playing, finding joy and freedom in those moments. She took immense pride in her children and grandchildren, celebrating their births as the highlights of her life. Raising them to be strong, independent, and family-oriented was among her greatest achievements.
Tragically, Patricia faced her greatest battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which ultimately led to her passing. Throughout this difficult time, her family—Mike, Brendon, Chelsey, and Mikey—stood by her side, offering unwavering love and support as she navigated this challenging journey. Despite their efforts and her strength, the disease took its toll, and she passed away surrounded by her loved ones.
Patricia was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Mary Dunne, as well as her brothers Conrad, Joseph, and brother-in-law, David Swyryda. She leaves behind her grieving brothers and sisters, Annette Swyryda, Billy (Joanne) Dunne, Evelyn Dunne, Trudy (Jerry) Meng, Rose (Bryan) Arneson, Randy Dunne, Ruben Dunne, Linda (Les) Schutte and Jason Dunne.
Patricia’s immediate family, including her devoted partner Michael, son Brendon and grandsons Braden and Kolson, daughter Chelsey (Jordan) Butler and grandsons Hudson and Kaleb, and son Mikey Skibinsky, carry a profound sense of loss. Patricia will forever live on in their memories and in the values, she instilled in them.
Patricia Skibinsky will be remembered not just for the challenges she faced, but for the love and joy she brought to those around her. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her, a guiding light of strength, kindness, and family devotion.
A celebration of Patricia’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 11, 2024, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, with Shawna Leson as certified celebrant. There will be no burial service at this time. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Saskatchewan Lung Association, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Patricia Skibinsky.
