Palma Pietropaolo
November 9, 1936 – September 16, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Palma Pietropaolo, who passed away peacefully on September 16, 2023 at the age of 86. Just as throughout life, her last days were spent surrounded by love and the presence of her beloved family. She is now reunited with her parents, Margherita and Francesco, her late brothers Giacomo and Gregorio.
She will be dearly missed by her loving husband and partner in life Francesco, cherished sons Vincenzo (Anne), Giacomo (Vincenza), and her adoring grandchildren Emma, Alex, Francesco and Sara. Palma will be lovingly remembered by her devoted sister Rosa Riga, dear sister in law Vincenza Riga and all her nieces and nephews.
Palma Riga was born in Maierato, Italy on November 9, 1936. She grew up one of four siblings in the small town and farming community learning how to cook, crochet, farm and garden, all skills she would carry with her throughout her life. She learned how to weave using the town’s communal loom and brought creativity and artistry to all that she did.
In 1960 she married Francesco Pietropaolo and they had two boys Vincenzo and Giacomo. In 1966 they made the decision to move to Toronto, Canada where they joined other family members. Over the years they built their lives around providing a home and a good life for their young family. Together Palma and Francesco shared many happy years of hard work, building a home and helping their sons and families to receive the education and opportunities for which they had always dreamed. Through good times and hardships there was always a large and loving extended family that Palma cared for with incredible meals, all her food lovingly prepared by hand. She loved to talk, laugh and joke and welcomed everyone into her home.
In her retirement Palma was happiest at home, in her garden and in her kitchen. She helped to care for all four grandchildren and embraced being a wonderful Nonna! She was a strong and feisty lady who was never shy to tell you what she thought. She tried to impart her wisdom and life lessons and was a surprisingly patient teacher, showing her daughters in law and grandchildren how to make traditional pasta fileja, biscotti and even how to properly iron a shirt.
She continued to show strength, courage and determination right through her recent illness, rarely complaining and glad to have time feeding her family from her garden and kitchen. Her husband Francesco and sister Rosa were always right by her side, with devotion and care.
We will all treasure the time we had with her and were all blessed to have her in our lives.
