Ophra Benazon
Peacefully on October 12, 2023, with her family by her side. Ophra is survived by her three children, Ariel, Netta, and Nili Benazon, her son-in-law, Eric Hessels, and her three grandchildren, Daniel and Rebecca Lencki and Jodi Hessels. She is predeceased by her husband, Michael Benazon.
Ophra was an independent, lively woman, a loving wife, Mother, and Grandmother, and an artist, scholar, teacher, and musician. She was fully engaged in all of what life brought her. Born in Haifa under British rule, Ophra grew up during the war of independence and watched her nation become a strong country. Like most Israelis, she was drafted to the army where she served her country for two years and met the love of her life, Michael, who she married. As a young woman, Ophra studied history and bible and earned her teaching certificate at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She then practiced as a teacher and began to raise her young family in Haifa.
Circumstances brought her and her young family to the Toronto area, Michael’s place of birth, where Ophra enrolled in art classes and quickly became a talented artist, winning awards at art exhibitions and gaining recognition for her work. Life events later brought the family to Lennoxville, Quebec where she engaged with the francophone artist community and with the local college community. Ophra worked as an art teacher, first at Champlain Regional College, then at Bishop’s University. She also continued producing and exhibiting her art and managed the university art gallery, where she facilitated the exhibition of art works by local artists and mentored young budding artists.
Later in her life, Ophra studied at Concordia University where she earned a Master’s and Ph.D. degree in art education and applied her learnings to her career as an artist and art teacher. After her retirement, she relocated to Montreal with her husband where she picked up the violin, her instrument of choice in her youth, and performed in the McGill orchestra as second, then first violinist.
After her husband passed away, Ophra spent many wonderful years with her three children and three grandchildren and continued to enrich her mind by taking adult learning courses at the Thomas Moore Institute in Montreal. Ophra loved, and was loved by, her family and close friends. She will continue to live on through her children and grandchildren.
A private funeral will be held.
