Moore, Norman Joseph
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Norman (Norm) Moore at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elliot Lake on September 26, 2023.
Born October 27, 1940 in Cobalt, Ontario to Norman “Ted” Moore and Mary Moore (both predeceased).
Norm is survived by Edelgard “Edie” Moore his loving wife of 62 years and his two children Brian (Maria) Moore of Etobicoke and Cathy Moore of Sudbury. Grampa will be missed by his two much loved grandchildren Rebecca and Samuel. Fondly remembered by his sisters Echo Godsmark and Kim Walker and by the rest of his family.
After marrying his high school sweetheart in Malartic, Quebec in 1961, Norm moved his young family to Elliot Lake in 1968. Elliot Lake turned out the be the perfect choice of hometown, where he could indulge in his lifelong love of the outdoors.
Upon moving to Elliot Lake, Norm would help organize the Elliot Lake men’s hockey house league and volunteered his time teaching hockey school, continuing a lifelong passion for hockey. In 1959 ‘Stormin’ was a star forward on the Malartic Canadiens team that won the NOHA junior B championship, defeating the best team from northern Ontario. If only the NHL had more than six teams in the 1950’s, he would often say. And he might have been right! Norm would go on to coach the Elliot Lake Vikings Junior B hockey team in the early 1980’s.
Norm worked as Chief Surveyor at Denison Mines until it closed. During his tenure there, he was actively involved with mine rescue and first aid, winning provincial competitions on both teams.
One of Norm’s defining qualities was his sense of humor, often catching people off guard with his comments and teasing. He was known to his beloved grandchildren as an avid storyteller, always keeping them entertained.
Norm’s passion for hockey and the outdoors could only be surpassed by the deep devotion he felt for his family. A loving family man, Norm was always generous with his time, and genuinely enjoyed every minute he could spend with family.
Norm will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Wannan (his family doctor for over 50 years) and Dr. Stirling, as well as the nurses on the 3rd floor who took such wonderful care of our husband/father.
In keeping with Norm’s wishes, there will be no service or visitation.
For those so wishing, donations in memory of Norm may be made to the St Joseph’s Foundation of Elliot Lake (Oncology Renovation Project).
