In her 100th year, after a joyful and purposeful life.
Norma was born in Geelong Australia, and lived for 71 years in Wakefield, Quebec where she came to nurse in 1953. Beloved wife of Dr. Stuart Geggie who predeceased her in 1997. Much loved mother of Andrew (Amanda), Judy (Ricki), and John (Laïla-Gabrielle). Beloved grandmother of Leila, Nick, and Daniel. “Nanny Norma” to her great grandchildren Freddie and Stuart whom she adored. Leaves nieces Susan and Emy in Ottawa and Montreal, and a large and loving family in Australia, including her last remaining brother, Ron and sister-in-law Joan.
Norma was an adventurer, a calm and efficient nurse and midwife, a spinner, weaver, seamstress, camper, canoer, gardener, lifelong writer, historian, a pragmatic seeker of solutions, and consummate volunteer. Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal and the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. A role model. A do-er rather than a philosopher.
Norma was fiercely independent and lived contentedly at home until three days before her death. Her last volunteer project was helping to establish Wakefield’s beautiful palliative care home, La Maison des Collines. It is fitting that she spent her last few days embraced by its care.
Norma was able to stay in her own home through the assistance of a great number of people. Many thanks to Dr. David Gold, the incomparable staff at La Maison des Collines, her wonderful CLSC homecare team, and Rev. Éric Hébert-Daly. Special gratitude to Linda Gillies for long years of personal support. Thanks to the dear friends who visited in person or over Zoom and those who dropped off flowers, desserts, chocolates, books, quilts, and who helped in times of need. These are too numerous to name entirely but special appreciation to Nicole, Brooke, Jutta, Margo and Jacques, Brenda, Ruthi, the Wakefield Grannies, her Writers’ Group, névé dumas and many others. We are deeply grateful.
In lieu of flowers, donations to La Maison des Collines in Norma’s name, or to the Wakefield Grannies would be received with gratitude.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
