Netty Rommens Obituary
We are sad to announce the passing of Netty Rommens July 3rd,. She was the beloved wife of Bill
Rommens Sr., a proud mother of Bill (Deanne) Rommens, Cheryl Rommens, and Rina (Bruce) Hempel, and a treasured Oma to Amber Rommens, Brooke (Edgar) Duiga and young Wyatt; Brandon (Sarah) Rommens,
Remy and young River; Bobi (Cody) Brown and little Jorgia Gene; Katie Edelmann (Brody Valette); Lisa
(John) Wurz and Tiernan, Cayson, and young Jett; Amanda (Andrew) Glubrecht and Tory. Her memory will also be cherished by her sister Luuc Gent, sisters-in-law Cora Rommens, Margaret Rommens, Wilma Rommens, Cory Rommens, along with many nieces and nephews in Canada and Holland, as well many friends.
Mom was predeceased by her mom and dad, the love of her life, Bill Rommens Sr., her great grandson William Remy Rommens, and many siblings to herself and dad.
Netty was born May 16, 1936, and was raised in Breda, Holland. She lost her dad in a motor vehicle accident when she was almost 2, making her childhood more difficult than most; being the youngest of 6 kids during the second WW. She often said, “you don’t know what hungry means.” Netty shared many memories of her mom (or whoever in the family that was able) taking the family bike to the rural cousins’ farm to gather all the food they could to fit on the bike. During the war they relied on those bike trips to survive. Netty started kindergarten at 3 years of age, so she was not alone at home while her mom did the milk cart and operated their store.
Netty went to school till grade 10. She had to quit school to work so she could contribute money to the family funds. She worked various jobs from wrapping gifts for a department store, to working in a bank. She was never afraid to work hard to contribute her paycheck.
In 1962 she met Bill Sr. Then, within a year later, she was married and planning the move to Canada. Netty survived the first year away from home, and within that year she gave birth to her first child, a boy they named William, Billy for short. Then in 1966 they were blessed with a gift named Cheryl, and lastly another little girl named Rina. Their family would be complete until 1988 when Deanne officially became a part of the family, adding 3 more blessings to our family tree, Amber, Brooke, and Brandon to complete their set. In 1994, Bobi grew our family, and in 1998, Katie was born. This will complete the family temporarily. In 2008 she received a new son in law, Bruce Hempel, and was gifted 2 more grandkids. Her family over the years celebrates 7 grandkids and 8 great grandkids. Oma was her most treasured title, and each of her grandkids and great grandkids lined her heart with gold. Her family was her most treasured legacy, and creating the absolute best life for each of her kids was her greatest passion.
When construction slowed down, Netty acquired a job at the Strathmore hospital as a housekeeper. Netty was so excited, and she again entered the workforce to contribute to the family funds. Netty decided she wanted to do more, so she went back to school at the age of 48 to become an LPN, which was a challenge for her. With her limited academic opportunities growing up, having to quit school to work, and with English as her second language, she persevered and graduated. When she finished, she immediately received her position at the Strathmore hospital. This was an incredibly special chapter in her life in which she made so many friends and cared for so many people. Netty retired in 1996 and became a full-time Oma.
In retirement, Netty enjoyed travelling with and sometimes without dad. Kimberely, Hawaii, Portugal, Scotland, and several trips back to Holland were among her favorites. Netty and Bill Sr. bought a motorhome that they enjoyed, and often went on short trips and sometimes longer excursions. She was always busy with her knitting, crochet, and her needlepoint. Her infamous baby sweaters and her
needlepoint masterpieces are items she prided herself on.
Netty was the epitome of strength, steadfast in her beliefs and the queen of perseverance. She triumphed over childhood hardships, and as a young adult, left her home to build a life across the pond with Bill Sr. She had to learn English, she raised 3 children, became a Licensed Practical Nurse at 50, beat breast cancer, and proceeded to live 9 years without the love of her life. She will always be the symbol of strength that is unmatched by many.
Netty will be remembered for her strength, her kindness, her compassion, her quick wit, and her sense of humor. Her love for her family and her ability to connect with everyone was her superpower, but her ability to know what tastes good will always trigger-happy thoughts. Memories of chocolate sprinkle toast, her fresh baked buns, her endless supply of banana choc. chip muffins, her pecan bites, her cherry cheesecake, her pineapple delight, her croquettes, and most of all her sausage rolls that everyone enjoyed.
Netty was a friend to all, a sparkle for many, and a spark for some. Her impact on all who knew her will be forever felt and missed.
Netty’s family would like to thank Homecare and our care team who made it possible for her to stay home, Dr Lobay and Dr. Sader, Wheatland Hospice Volunteers as well as the Value Drug Mart team.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Foothills NICU in memory of little Remy Rommens, who was Oma’s great grandson. Please follow this link to donate.
