It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Father, Grandfather on January 05, 2023 who passed away peacefully at VGH. In 1924, he was born and raised in Vancouver’s Chinatown. At the age of 18, Neill enlisted with the Canadian Army and was seconded to the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) to serve in Force 136 where he did undercover missions in India and the Japanese occupied Burma during WWII. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Burma Star Medal and later in his life, the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal. After being honourably discharged in 1946, Neill came home to work in the lumberyards in Port Alice and along the BC Coast. He continued to work in the lumber industry at various mills including Rainier Mill and Western Forest Products in Vancouver until his retirement in 1989. Neill went on to help establish the Chinese Canadian Military Museum Society in 1998. He was active in the society and continued to attend meetings via Zoom in recent years.
He is survived by his children Tracy (Carson), Robin (Nib), and his sister (Susie). He was a loving grandfather to his grandchildren Cameron, Eric and Michael. He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife (Mable) and two siblings (Lam and Lungy). He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, friends and their families who are feeling profoundly sad without him in their life now. He was loved and respected and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 27, 2023 at 10:00am (viewing), 11:00am (mass), Fr. Joseph (Joe) Hieu Nguyen celebrant, at St. Andrews Church, 480 East 47th Avenue, Vancouver. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 5455 Fraser Street, Vancouver.
