Living Life to the Fullest
Nancy Castagner, a retired nurse extraordinaire, passed away at the age of 73 from cancer on August 25th 2023.
She was born April 3rd 1950, to Eglantine and Hugo Lavoy. Nancy’s nursing career began in England where she trained for three years at St. Giles Hospital, returning to Canada to continue her career in Montreal at the Royal Victoria and Lakeshore General Hospitals where she worked in the ICU ward, and many years later at the Gastroenterology Center in Pointe Claire, Quebec. Most importantly Nancy was the everything-medical-consultant for her family and friends. Without her medical guidance, we would have likely perished.
Nancy is survived by her most loving and devoted husband of 43 years, Andre Castagner, her children, Vanessa and Marc-Andre and his partner Mica, her “daughter from another mother”, Cynthia, her three brothers Michael, Patrick, and Richard Lavoy, her sister Evelyn Paulson, her sisters-in-law Ann, Linda and Murielle, brother-in-law Larry, and her deftly talented bird-catching cat, Ella.
Upon completion of her nursing degree, Nancy worked for several years then left to travel the world staying months in exotic places to truly experience the people and the places where she journeyed. The months turned into years as she worked as a nurse in various countries saving money to further the boundaries of her travels. Nancy bravely embraced all of life and the character-building experiences she had. These experiences became guideposts for future phases in her life. Nancy returned home to meet the love of her life, a neighbour boy, who would become the man that would stand at her side through thick and thin: Andre. They bought their first home in Terrasse-Vaudreuil and raised their children there. Nancy held the family together and worked as a nurse while Andre built his career with Air Canada.
Through all these early years Nancy (and Andre) had the charisma to make and keep friends. Nancy knew how to make people welcome; how to listen to them and tempt them with her cooking and most importantly how to make space for joy for all. The wine flowed. The friendships blossomed. Their home was the center of dozens upon dozens of gatherings every year. Nancy’s home was filled with her children, her friends’ kids, and the neighborhood kids. It was the place to be. Nancy’s earlier travel guideposts dictated living life to the fullest.
Nancy filled her beloved lakeside home with all that she treasured; her family, friends, her beautiful paintings, and all the artifacts and jewellery she collected from across the globe. Nancy continued to travel the world, thanks to Air Canada passes, and encouraged her friends and family to join her and Andre on their trips far and wide. Though weak and so very ill, she still yearned to experience new people and places, and even in the last months of life Nancy travelled with her husband, children, and friends to Mexico, Spain, and Columbia. This woman loved an adventure.
