Micheal “Mikey” MacLaurin
April 20th, 1966 – September 27th, 2023
Micheal “Mikey” MacLaurin, aged 57 passed on unexpectedly from a lifelong battle with addictions on September 27th, 2023, at his home in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He was receiving care at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital up until a few days before his passing. He tried his hardest to fight his demons, but they finally caught up with him in the end.
Mikey was born in Fort William during the spring of April 1966 to Dennis Maclaurin and Maureen Bannon. He lived his life growing up on the Fort William First Nation, where he met many of his best friends and family. Tragedy struck and took away his brother Wesley at a young age, where he would form an unbreakable relationship with Liisa Nevala and Wesley’s daughter Stephanie Nevala. He would go on and the two would have 3 more children (Xavier, Krystynna and Micheal Maclaurin) whom he would love with great passion, and his whole heart! Life wasn’t all ways easy for Mikey, but he would take the good with the bad and vice versa.
He often expressed himself with stories to his children and others. You could never shake his good vibes and extremely personable attitude towards life and the people who he met. He would often say his humor, his skills for making people laugh and smile were from growing up “rough!” He loved his friends and family and would bring his kids with him to meet family on the reserve when they were old enough to see him. There wasn’t a person you met that didn’t have a good story to tell you about “Mikey”, he was a great man, and he will be missed by so many. His life will live on in those telling’s and memories!
He was an avid writer and loved his poetry, he often thought of the what ifs and expressed to his children always to attend school. He was very well spoken, and you would often find him having a smoke with people sharing his stories and laughs for the day.
Mikey is survived by his children, Stephanie Nevala, Xavier, Krystynna and Micheal Maclaurin. His sisters Jenelle Bannon (Eugene Bannon), Jennifer Spence (John Hamilton), Virginia Rose MacLaurin, and Billie Jean MacLaurin. His Father Dennis Maclaurin. He is predeceased by his sister Bonnie Bannon, his brothers Wesley Maclaurin, Wayne Bannon and his mother Maureen Bannon.
He also has numerous cousins, nephews and nieces whom he all loved that will carry on his memories and stories. On his trip to the other side of the river he will meet many family that have passed and I’m sure he will have stories to tell.
A celebration of life will be taking place at Blakes Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023, at 12:00 until 2:00 where loved ones can come gather, share stories and say their goodbyes. A burial will follow at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery on Fort William First Nation.
