On August 25, 2023, Mike at 82 years of age, of Windsor passed away after a brief battle with an infection.
He is survived by his wife Pauline (nee Denomme), his children Michelle Muncaster (Bernie), Bob (Dena), Ken (Mara), Brian (Jennifer), his grandchildren Hunter (Kaitlyn), Craig (Caitlin), Remington (Emma), Sean (Katie), Owen, Parker, Olivia, Liam, and his great-grandchildren Brennan, Grace and Wyatt. Brother of Dennis and the late Jill (2022), and Uncle to Allison and Ray. Predeceased by his parents Raymond Menard (1994) and Lillie (nee MacDonald, 1998) and in-laws Leonard Denomme (1994) and Matilda (nee Papineau, 2017).
Thank-you to the nurses of the 7th floor of Windsor Regional Ouellette campus and thanks in particular to Dr. Adam Loennberg. He had a brief chat with Mike when he entered the hospital and quickly got a sense of his thoughts and wishes. Dr. Loennberg was kind, composed, and compassionate and took the time to speak with Mike’s family as they strove to meet Mike’s wishes.
Mike was devoted to his wife and family. Mike and Pauline met at ages 19 and 16 respectively and began building a wonderful life together. They married on September 5, 1964 and would have very shortly celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Mike and Pauline, a most hardworking and loving couple, proved to be a wonderful example for their four children and set them up for successful lives of their own. Mike was most proud of the fact that all of his children married and have strong and lasting relationships. He was amazed by the ingenuity of all of his kids and probably didn’t realize how much they gained this ability from him. He took immense pleasure in watching his grandchildren grow and succeed, and hoped for the same for his great-grandchildren.
Mike was a protective big brother for Denny and they remained close throughout their lives sharing the same sense of humour, interests in tinkering, fishing, and television.
Mike spent his career as a tool and die maker at various businesses around the Windsor area, including Bendix, Gibson Electric, and North American Precision Tool.
Mike loved the great outdoors, camping, and fishing, and his most favourite place to relax and enjoy it was the moose camp in northern Ontario. Bob, Ken and Brian all spent many occasions with him there fishing, eating, laughing, and having a great time. It was difficult for Mike this summer not being able to go with them but he finally came to the realization that he had taught them all they needed to know to survive in the bush. Mike expressed a strong desire to return to the lake so that he can in turn feed the fish that fed him.
Mike financed the moose camp fishing trips by recycling scrap metal and anyone who knew Mike knew his focus (obsession) with the process. Many, many items were stopped from going to the dump by him single-handily getting that BBQ, washer, dryer or any other piece of metal off of the street.
Mike was a very social guy, ready to talk to any passerby on the street. He remained connected with a group of friends some of whom were childhood friends and saw them for weekly Saturday morning breakfasts. The waitress was well aware of Mike’s love of pepper on his eggs and brought them black without being asked. Mike was old-school, if he needed to talk to someone, he didn’t pick up the phone, instead he wandered over to be with whomever he needed to talk to. He had his fingers on the pulse of the activities on the street, talking with any one out to repair something even if it was at 3:00 am. Mike was well loved by his neighbours and he has even been called the “Mayor of Clarice.” Life on the street won’t be the same without him.
Nor will the life of his wife and family. There is a very large tear in the fabric of our family that we will attempt to hold together and repair knowing that we have many wonderful memories of a one-of-a-kind man, husband, father, father-in-law and Pepe.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to IRIS House (Iris Residential Inns and Services, irisinns.ca/) or the charity of your choice.
As Mike requested, cremation has taken place.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
