Michael Kirk Harvey of Toronto Ontario passed away on January 19, 2023 at Princess Margaret Hospital after his second and courageous battle with cancer. He fought until the end.
He was born on April 5, 1963 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Denyse and William Harvey. He grew up with his older brother Will and younger sister Danae. As a teen he loved spending his time playing lacrosse and hockey and received league wide recognition for his skill and sportsmanship. Later he attended Clarkson University to play D1 hockey. After graduating university he played professional hockey in Germany for many years. Upon returning to Canada he found his love in mentorship and teaching within the TDSB. He was able to combine his passion for hockey and teaching when he ran St. Michael’s Hockey School. For the last 10 years Michael was the proud Principal of Jarvis CI and Native Learning Centre.
In his 20’s he met the love of his life, Ann Bianco, on a ski hill in Vail. They fell in love and would be married 30 years this year. His wife Ann will remember the strength of their partnership, the memories they’ve shared, and the joy in raising their children. Their two daughters Bianca and Cassandra Harvey will remember their dad as the man who taught them how to skate, who told them the best bedtime stories, and who constantly supported them in anything and everything they sought out to do. As a family they loved roller blading the Humber River, skiing at Sir Sams, going up to their cottage, eating sushi at Gojima, and daily morning dog walks to their neighbourhood Starbucks.
He is loved by many, including his extended family. Next to his family Michael’s passion was his school. His focus was to support the students, staff and community, and create a safe environment for all. He always wanted to ensure his students and staff felt motivated and inspired to reach their potential even when it didn’t seem possible.
The visitation will be held at Turner and Porter (2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto) on Thursday, January 26, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 pm and 5:00-8:00 pm, and Friday, January 27, 2023 from 5:00-8:00 pm. All are welcome to come and pay their respects.
The Harvey family would like to thank everyone for their support and kind words during this time. They would also like to thank the staff at Princess Margaret Hospital for their devotion and care.
