«Michael» Francis Hennessey
1926-2024
Michael Francis Hennessey
(May 23, 1926 – December 2, 2024)
Michael Hennessey, an Island born educator, university
administrator, and writer passed away on Monday, December 2 at the age
of 98.
Born in Charlottetown in 1926, Mike was educated at Queen
Square School, St. Dunstan’s High School, and St.
Dunstan’s University. Well known for his athletic skills,
Mike played four years of Varsity rugby, hockey, and basketball at
SDU. He was one of a handful of athletes who received a silver
«D» for excellence in three sports. He was also the editor
of the Red and White, the SDU’s student publication. After
his father died, Mike assumed responsibility for the family business,
the Hennessey Funeral Home. But realizing that was not his path, he
decided to resume his education, completing his B.Ed. at St. Francis
Xavier in 1955.
Mike served seven years in the Royal Canadian Navy, much of
it at sea. He proudly served aboard many Canadian warships including
the HMC LLEWELLYN, LA HULLOISE and ANTIGONISH, the destroyer CRUSADER,
and the PORTAGE. He retired from the navy with the rank of
Lieutenant-Commander.
After spending time training in the United States, Mike
launched the first school for the deaf in PEI. He taught there for
several years and was always fondly remembered by his former students.
He then trained and served as a guidance counsellor at Birchwood High
School.
Mike was appointed Registrar at St. Dunstan’s
University in 1963 and continued in that position when UPEI was
established in 1969. Many former students remember the time he took to
meet with them individually and help guide them on their future path.
Mike took early retirement after 25 years in this position,
but served as secretary to the Board of Governors for another seven
years.
Mike dedicated a large part of his life to his first joy:
writing fiction. His short stories have appeared in many publications
and electronic magazines, and in anthologies. He wrote four
books:
Salt in Their Blood, the WW II history of four ships
named after Island communities; two collections of short stories, An
Arch for the King, and My Broken Hero; and a novel, The
Betrayer.
He also edited The Catholic Church in PEI: 1720-1979. Ten of
his plays have been produced on stage, and two on CBC Radio. He won
several awards for his stories and plays. He wrote 192 crime and
mystery book reviews for I Love a Mystery, a California e-magazine
until it ceased publishing in 2014.
He was a charter member of the PEI Writers’ Guild
and served a term as Chair. He was also a member of the Crime Writers
of Canada, the Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre, the Writers
Federation of Nova Scotia, the Playwrights Union of Canada, and The
Writers’ Union of Canada In 2001 he was the recipient of the
PEI Council of the Arts Award for Distinguished Contribution to the
Literary Arts on PEI.
As a journalist, Mike served as Island correspondent for the
Halifax Chronicle-Herald for seven years, and wrote a sports column
for the Charlottetown Patriot for four years. He also had
over 100 opinion-type broadcasts aired on CBC Radio on such
programs as Cross-Country Matinee, Opinion, Maritime Magazine, and In
Canada This Week.
His community work included 26 years as Chair of the PEI
Employment Standards Board, and over 20 years delivering Meals on
Wheels. He served as secretary on the board of the Alcohol and Drug
Problems Institute for over 12 years, and was secretary of the Celtic
Heritage Association from 1990 to 2019.
Mike was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife, Aletha
«Dolly» (Doyle), his two sisters Mary (Ronan MacDonald) and
Francis (Harold Bowlan), and his brother George (Theresa
McIntyre).
He is survived by his five children Kathleen (Mike Garrett),
Maureen, Frank (Susan Linkletter, deceased), Sean (Roberta MacDonald),
and Patrick (Rose FitzPatrick); his nine grandchildren: Kylah (Danny
Cusack), Ryan (Lori Gallant), Kieran (Kate McSwain), Dylan (Jessie
Hartmann), Conor (Cassandra Stoddart), and Liam Hennessey, and
Michelle (Mike Raynard), Shannon (Cheryl Foster), and Kristen Garrett;
and ten great-grandchildren.

Yes, Death.
Death must be so beautiful.
To lie in the soft brown earth,
with the grasses waving above one’s head, and listen to
silence.
To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow.
To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace.
You can help me.
You can open for me the portals of Death’s house, for Love is
always with you, and Love is stronger than Death.
