Merlynn Glenn Shantz – It is with profound sadness our family announce the peaceful passing of Merlynn Shantz on July 15, 2023 in his 90th year. Cherished husband of 67 years to Helen May (nee Cowle). Loving father of Ted (Dianne) Shantz of Calgary Alberta, Robert (Wendy) Shantz of Oshawa, Lynn Annan of Oshawa, Barbara Shantz of Bowmanville and Laura Joy (Brad) Rogers of Bowmanville. Predeceased by his parents Ezra Shantz and Clara (Russell) Wright, his sister Dora (Harold) Martyn and his second eldest grandchild Jason Shantz. He will be profoundly missed by his grandchildren Shannon Shantz, Ryan (Ashley) Shantz, Kristopher (Shauna) Shantz, Kory Annan, Chelsea Farrell and Hannah (Travis) Stauffer. His five great grandchildren Mason, Kayleigh, Liam, Theodore and Benjamin will forever miss him. Merlynn will also be dearly missed by his closest friend Cam (Lori) Gordon.
Merlynn retired from the Bowmanville Goodyear plant in 1990 after 39 years. Born on a farm in Enniskillen Ontario, Merlynn shared his love of agriculture with all who knew him. Merlynn could always be found in his shed working on his collection of antique tractors and automobiles or tending to his gardens. Except every morning at 11am when he’d come inside to watch The Price is Right. His sweet kitty Mortimer, who followed him everywhere, would jump in his lap and purr away as he ate his lunch. Most afternoons he would sit out back and feed peanuts to the birds and squirrels while sipping a cold beer. His favourite sports team was the Toronto Blue Jays and he never missed a game. He met many friends over the years through his love of classic cars, especially Studebakers, International trucks and Indian motorcycles.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Fosterbrooke Long Term Care for four years of dedicated care.
Friends may call for visitation on Thursday, July 20 at Morris Funeral Chapel from 12PM until time of service in the funeral home at 1PM. Interment to follow at Bowmanville Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations to the charity of your choice are greatly appreciated.
