At the age of 86, Mel Hooper of Winnipeg, MB, passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Grace Hospital on January 24, 2023.
Mel was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Mary Hooper; brothers, Willy Hooper, Buzz Hooper and Jack Hooper.
Mel is survived by his wife of 63 years Carol Hooper; children, Blair (Barb) Hooper, Cheryl (Randy) Nault, Joanne (Ken) Lintott; grandchildren, Mitchel (Jen) Nault, Sharly (Alex) Nault, Carter Lintott, Siena Hooper; great grandchild Élodie Poppy Munilla; sisters, Vivian McKenzie and Lynne (Jim) Devlin.
Mel was born in Cowan, MB. Although the Hooper’s moved various times, he spent most of his childhood in Swan River, MB. This was where he would eventually meet his future bride Carol Mault. Carol recalls their first meeting at a dance with friends where she said she could only describe it as love at first sight. Mel and Carol were married on Oct 12, 1959 in Swan River, MB.
Mel worked for the Canadian National Railway as a dispatcher for 37 years. His career with CNR led him to several towns and cities throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Mel and Carol finally settled down in The Pas, MB, where they raised their family and made many lasting friendships.
Mel and Carol enjoyed summers camping at Iskwasum Lake and Red Deer River, where they spent their time out on the boat fishing for pickerel.
Mel never turned down a chance to entertain, and could often be heard sharing his gift of song at parties and family events.
Mel and Carol moved to Winnipeg, MB in 1983, where Mel retired in 1995. Mel filled his time during retirement at the curling rink and on the golf course. While he had spent most of his life being an excellent curler, one of his most proud moments was at the Heather Rink, when he scored an eight-ender. Another fond memory he often recalled, was his golf game in Calgary where he achieved a hole in one.
Mel and Carol’s house on Wakefield Bay in Winnipeg was frequented by their grandchildren. Mel’s helpers often demanded wheelbarrow rides and snacks of fresh peas and rhubarb from the garden.
Mel’s family will remember his quick wit and sense of humor. His love of golf will be carried on through his children and grandchildren. Every game we’ll think of him and a million treasured moments out on the course.
Mel will remain forever in our hearts as the most loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Keep singing Mel, we’ll miss you!
Cremation has taken place and there will be no service.
