Obituary
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mei Lan Tan. After a brief illness, she died peacefully on January 1, 2023 at Lakeridge Gardens Long-Term Care in Ajax. Mei Lan has been reunited in Heaven with her loving husband, Giok Liong.
Mei Lan was a loving and devoted mother to Sian (John), Lian (Toivo), and Gwan (Laura). Cherished Oma to Christopher, Michael, Jonathan, Ryan, and Stephen. Beloved sister to Kim Lan (predeceased),Tiong Lim (Budhi) (predeceased), Tiong Gie, and Tiong An.
Mei Lan was born on May 8, 1930, in Purbolinggo, Indonesia to Koen Lee and Kira Gan. She and her husband, Giok Liong, courageously set out to create a new life for their family moving in 1963 to Munich, Germany, and then to Toronto in 1968. Mei Lan and Giok Liong ran the successful Bali restaurant on Avenue Road for over 30 years.
She was the epitome of strength, courage, kindness, compassion, and motherly love. Family meant everything to her. Mei Lan had a ready smile and was always full of life and laughter. She was an excellent cook, insisting on feeding anyone who came into her home.
We would like to thank all the awesome nurses and staff at Lakeridge Gardens 6West for their love and caring support to Mei Mei.
Mei Lan will be held dear in the hearts of all those who loved her. May she rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation www.aphfoundation.ca/ or the Alzheimer Society of Ontario alzheimer.ca/on/en/about-us/alzheimer-society-ontario“

Oma Mei Lan was the best Indonesian Chef in Toronto. Very kind and generous Oma, always have something to offer. I will never forget you Oma. So many wonderful memories from Bible study, car rides to grocery store to buy kulit pangsit, going to eat at Mr Congee, UKI Trip for mass and so many others. So many times you bring me food and for my own Oma and Opa and for my parents and sister too. I will never forget your kindness and your jokes will certain be missed too. Rest in Peace Oma… enjoy eternal rest in Heaven.
