Max Rapoport died peacefully on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at the Jewish General Hospital, after a brief illness. Predeceased by his parents, Lily and Israel, and his brother, Hershey (Janet), he is survived by his wife and best friend of sixty-eight years, Joyce; his daughters, Nina (Denys) and Lisa (Chris); grandson, Mercer; nephews Tony (Thea) and Adam, nieces Lisa (Ira), Deidre (Alan), Amy (Julio), Andrea (Bernie), and their children. And his many and varied and lovely friends.
Max enriched the lives of all who knew him. His ever-curious mind led him to always be learning, always be making. Max’s roots in Montreal were deep, growing up on the Main and built his practice not far from there. He loved his work and took great pleasure in caring for his patients well into his 80s.
Max had many talents. If he developed an interest in something, not only did he learn how to do it, he typically excelled at it. Once he had mastered any new skill, his next move was typically to channel his infectious enthusiasm and get all of his friends and family hooked as well. There are many more sailors, skiers, cyclists, photographers, and wild garlic foragers today as a result of his efforts.
But mostly, what we will miss is his role as Life of the Party. Max brightened every room he walked into, telling stories, asking probing questions, and listening intently to what people were saying. And occasionally dancing.
The world is diminished without his presence.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Sunday, February 11 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva at his home from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday only. Donations in Max’s name may be made to the Jewish General Hospital Foundation, (514) 340-8251.
