He leaves behind his mother, Irene Katie Marion, his sister, Melissa Marion-Van Barneveld (Jeremy), sister-in-Law Sarah Zeversenuke, and brother Michael Marion. Matt is a beloved Uncle to Paige, Jacob, and Lydia Marion, as well as Addison and Isabella Van Barneveld. Matthew was pre-deceased by his father, Mark Marion; stepfather, Dennis Krajaefski; his grandparents, Berend and Berendina Van Klinken; and Uncle Johannes Van Klinken.
Matt will be sadly missed by his friends and his Toronto community, including Neil McCallum, Alonso Salinas, Daniel Kelly, Phil & Laurie Barker.
Matt was born in London, Ontario, on May 18, 1982. He was raised in London and lived there until he moved to Toronto in 2010.
Matt was a man of many talents and passions, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Matt had a passion for collecting things that ran deep. His Opa, who shared this love, significantly influenced his life, often accompanying Matt in his younger years on memorable garage sale hunts. Matt enjoyed collecting rare coins, porcelain signs, antiques, and fine furniture, but he had a special fondness for railway memorabilia. His enthusiasm for trains in particular were unmatched – he was highly knowledgeable about North American railroads and could speak with authority on the subject for hours. One of his fondest childhood memories was a train trip with his Uncle Mack, where he had the honor of blowing the train’s whistle.
After moving to Toronto in 2010, Matt embarked on a journey of recovery and transformation. He found strength and support in his new life and forged lasting friendships with the members of his recovery community, often fondly referring to them as his “friends of BILL”
Matt had a love and infinity for woodworking, a skill passed down to him by his father. Matt’s professional journey led him from stair and railing installation to building and installing intricate woodwork for many prominent clients in Toronto. His attention to detail and commitment to quality earned him great respect in his field. His work was admired not only for its craftsmanship but also for the passion he poured into every project. His work has graced many homes and businesses in Toronto.
In his spare time, Matt loved traveling, exploring new places, and seeking new experiences. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, from long conversations with friends to quiet moments of reflection. He loved to take road trips and explore, stopping at antique stores, hiking trails, and places of interest. He loved renovating his trailer in Bayfield and transforming it into a beautiful oasis. He loved to hike in the woods and trails and spend time at the lookout point overlooking Bayfield, his second home.
Beyond his skills and achievements, Matt was a kind and generous soul. He deeply desired to see others succeed and was always willing to lend a hand or share a word of encouragement. He treasured the kindness he received throughout his life and made it a point to pay that kindness forward to those around him.
Matt is survived by his loving family and many friends who will remember him for his generosity, dry sense of humor, and for living life with purpose. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
