Obituary
Mary Yagelniski (Kowal) of the Hyas district passed away at the Norquay Health Centre on Monday, March 20, 2023, at the age of 78.
Mary was born on the family farm in the Glen Elder district, to Steve and Dora (nee Maluga) Kowal on October 14, 1944. Mary would leave home early to walk the mile to Swan Bluff school where she would start a fire to get the school ready for class and she would stay late to clean at the end of the day. She attended Swan Bluff for grades one through eight and continued her education at the Sturgis Composite High School. Mary, along with her sisters, had to help on the family farm, since she didn’t have any brothers to help her dad. In her free time, she enjoyed going to dances, listening to the Saturday Night Get-Together on the radio, and cooking Ukrainian food. In July 1960, Mary met Adolph Yagelniski of the Danbury district. They exchanged their vows on October 12, 1961, and settled six miles north of Hyas where they began farming.
Adolph and Mary raised three children: two sons, Bernard and Stephen, and a daughter, Bernadette. They also enjoyed spending time with their six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mary worked at a nursing home in Saskatoon, at the bakery in Norquay, at the Hyas Bar, and finally as a school bus driver. Mary always welcomed company and wouldn’t let them leave without a cup of tea and a sweet treat. Mary’s past times also included cross-stitch, curling on a team as well as watching it on T.V., doing jigsaw puzzles, planting a huge garden that she always shared with family, and the family favorite, playing six deck Canasta until the early hours of the morning. As Mary grew older, she began facing the problems that come with age such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and finally Alzheimers.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Steve and Dora Kowal; her husband, Adolph; and her sisters, Martha (Paul) Kabay, Ann Turta, and Donna Wright.
She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her two sons, Bernard (Sherry) Yagelniski of Grenfell, SK and Stephen Yagelniski of Hyas, SK; her daughter, Bernadette (Brett) Marthaller of Rhein, SK; her sister, Sylvia (Orest) Dudiak of Yorkton, SK; her brother-in-law, Mike Wright of Saskatoon, SK; her six grandchildren: Trevor (Lori) Yagelniski of Clavet, SK, Amanda Friesen (Curtis) of Grenfell, SK, Adene Toews of Saskatoon, SK, Cynthia (Darren) Marthaller of Yorkton, SK, Zachery (Stephanie) Marthaller of Edmonton, AB, and Zoe Marthaller of Yorkton, SK; and eight great-grandchildren: Faith, Nikki, Elliott, Casey, Nicolas, Matthew, Karen, and Sunneva; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In her honour, the Funeral Service will take place at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 31, 2023, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac as Celebrant. Rite of Committal to follow at the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK.
Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Mary Yagelniski.
