Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Mary Witzko announce her passing at the Canora Gateway Lodge on March 13, 2023, at the age of 97 years.
Mary was born on April 7, 1925, to Joseph and Helen (nee Tomchyshyn) Gondziola in the Buchanan District, SK. She was raised with her siblings on the family farm. As a young adult, Mary worked at the Canora Union Hospital in Canora, SK.
On August 6, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to William Witzko in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and together they were blessed with seven children. In addition to the duties of being a devoted and loving wife and mother, Mary worked very hard with her husband and did the chores. She raised and sold many chickens.
Throughout her lifetime, Mary had the opportunity to see the Queen on three occasions – which means she saw three different queens. She told her family how she travelled by horse to meet the Queen the first time she saw her. Over the years, Mary enjoyed travels to Alberta and Manitoba, and her happiest times were family gatherings and celebrations. She loved to dance and enjoyed Ukrainian dancing.
Mary’s door was always open, and she loved to visit over a cup of tea. She spent an abundance of time in her gardens, made many quilts, did cross-stich and embroidery, and enjoyed playing card games, especially Canasta and Hola. Above all, Mary loved spending time with her family and cherished her time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary is survived by her sons, David (Jeanette) Witzko and Garry (Debbie) Witzko; daughters, Gale (Jerry) Strellaeff and Evangeline (Floyd) Glass; brother, Jimmy (Delores) Gondziola; sisters, Lucy Toffan and Verna Toffan; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Helen; her husband, William Witzko; son, Randy Witzko; daughters, Geraldine Englot and Marlene Witzko; sons-in-law, Ed Englot and Phil Dziaduck; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; sisters: Olga (metro) Sackney, Mathilda (Metro) Tiechko, Dehlia (Metro) Witzko, Nettie (Peter) Sliziak and Myrtle (Mike) Sliziak; and brothers-in-law, Nestor Toffan and Orest Toffan.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2023, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Shawna Leson as certified celebrant officiating. Interment will follow in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canora Gateway Lodge Auxiliary or to the Canora Hospital Auxiliary, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Mary Witzko.
