Mary’s Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Mary Szmata (nee Dedick), long-time resident of Grimshaw. Mary passed away suddenly on October 25, 2024 in Grande Prairie surrounded by family, at the age of 88 years.
Born in Peace River, Alberta on December 2, 1936 to parents John and Elsie Dedick. Mary was the sixth child of 12 children, 10 girls and 2 boys. They grew up on a farm near Reno (AB). This is where Mary found her love for gardening, cooking and the value of a close family.
She married Charles Szmata on February 20, 1958 and moved to the Szmata family farm north of Grimshaw where they lived until Mary’s passing. They raised 7 children; 3 boys and 4 girls.
Mary is predeceased by her two children Wanda Sklapsky and Eddy Szmata; Parents John and Elsie Dedick; and siblings Catherine Zavisha, Anne Boychuk, Lena Knapp, Helen Noskey and Tommie Dedick.
She is lovingly survived by her husband Charles of 66 years; Children Ken (Rachel), Debbie (Terry) Sadd, Pauline (Richard) Bentley, David (Corinne) and Tannis (Rod) Coen; 19 Grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all but not forgotten.
A Memorial Service will be held from the First Baptist Church, Peace River on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Briarcliffe Cemetery following the service. A time of fellowship will follow the interment at the Grimshaw Legion Hall.
