Dickey passed away peacefully in her 100th year with family by her side. She is predeceased by her husband Robert Paul Singer (1926-2019) and was the only child of Julia Lindsay and Earl Sidney Thomas. She will be greatly missed by her sons Tom (Joanne) and Peter (Cathie) and grandchildren Carolyn (Brian), David (Karrie), Scott (Mia), Jennifer (Philip), and Jeffrey (Michelle). Dickey was the proud Great-Grandmother of 13 – William, Caleb, Liam, Teddy, Ana, Charlotte, Madeline, Leo, Olivia, George, Finlay, Hugo, and Oliver.
Dickey lived a full life, growing up in Toronto and attending Havergal College (class of 1942) and the University of Toronto (Fine Arts 4T7). A highlight of her youth was visiting Aunts Mary and Susan in Buffalo. She was proud to tell stories of her time as an ambulance driver during the war when she took soldiers from the port to hospital. It was at a U of T “go single come home double” dance where Dickey met Bob and they built a life together with Bob taking over and successfully growing her father’s business, E.S.Thomas and Co. Ltd. They shared 72 wonderful years of marriage and had a loving bond, with Dickey often referring to Bob as her “boyfriend” while displaying her impish grin.
Dickey spent time volunteering with St. John’s Anglican Church York Mills, Belmont House and Goodwill Industries. Bob and Dickey travelled the world and they took each of their five grandchildren on their first big trip. They also enjoyed their time at their homes in Toronto, Lake Simcoe and Naples surrounded by a wide circle of friends and loving family dogs.
Dickey was a proud and involved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. Celebrating significant events and spending time with family was her greatest joy.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Maria for her loving care of Bob and Dickey for 13 years. Also thank you to Venetia, the wonderful caring helpers from Seniors for Seniors (Mary, Lois, Marilyn and Lynda), Integracare, the concierge staff at her condo and Sunnybrook Hospital for their compassionate support of Dickey in her final years.
A private family service has been planned. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
