Mary passed peacefully away in the care of the Ottawa Hospital on Sunday, October 27th, 2024, at the age of 98 years.
Predeceased by her husband Bill, parents George and Louise, brother Keith and his wife Anne, brother Rex, and nephew David.
Leaving with cherished memories are her sister Olwen, sister-in-law Betty, nieces Brenda, Bev (Doug), nephews Karl (Mary), Steve, and great nephews Ryan (Kayla), Daniel, Sam (Emma).
Mary was born in Joe Batts Arm, Fogo Island Newfoundland in 1926. After attending Memorial University, she began her teaching career in St. John’s. Over the course of a 40 year teaching career, Mary taught in Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia and Ontario. It was in Ontario that Mary met and married Bill, her husband of 37 years.
After retirement, she became a long time, dedicated volunteer at the Riverside Hospital in Ottawa and an avid gardener. Mary’s smiling face and vibrant personality will long be remembered by those who dealt with her at the Riverside information desk, special events at the Ottawa Hospital and in her gardens in the Hunt Club community where her acquaintances became friends and neighbours became family.
Mary’s family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Windsor Park Manor, her home of seven years, for their love and support. To the staff and doctors at Extendicare West End Villa, we thank you for your exceptional care during the last nine months.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will take place in Newfoundland at a later date.
