We are sad to announce the passing of Mary, our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her daughters: Cheryl (Ken) Danchuk, Debbie Massick, and Liz (Garth) Edmunds; daughter-in-law Michele; grandchildren: Jeremy Danchuk, Jackie Danchuk, Kyle (Jess) Danchuk, Gwen (Keith) Wallace, and Sarah Edmunds; great-grandchildren: Nicholas Wallace, Landon Wallace, Ainsley Wallace, and Ivar Danchuk; sister Pat Carr; as well as numerous relatives and friends.
Mary was predeceased by her ex-husband, Ernie Massick; her partner Bruno (Tiny) Scharfenberg; sisters Barb and Betty; and son Dan Massick.
Mary was born in Victoria, B.C. and met her husband, Ernie, at the Victoria Amateur Swim Club. They competed in diving and swimming competitions, including the annual Polar Bear Swim in Victoria’s inner harbour. They married in Victoria and built a home in Mill Bay, B.C. The family followed Ernie for work to: Prince George, Smithers, Coombs, and finally out to St. Albert, Alberta. They remained in the Edmonton area and Mary never regretted leaving behind the cloudy, grey skies of Vancouver Island for the sunny, blue skies of Alberta, even though it could be -30.
In 1984 she met her partner, Tiny. They had a love of travel and enjoyed Hawaii so much they visited more than 25 times! Mary’s travels also included bus trips to Reno and the New England states; trips to England, Scotland, Ireland, Mexico, Brazil; and tours of Europe, New Zealand and Australia, China and Tibet, and Russia. She enjoyed every one!
In addition to travelling, she also loved to drive. Whether it be touring around Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan, or out to Victoria for the annual Good Friday Bennett Family Reunion. She always drove straight thru, with a couple of cat naps along the way. In her mind there was no point stopping overnight, it just ate into her visiting time!
Mary was a social butterfly, and she spent her time volunteering with community leagues, Legion, Lions, Crohn’s and Colitis, and the Floral Arts Society of St. Albert, where she both took classes and taught. She was a member of S.E.E.S.A. and spent several days a week playing cards: whist, crib, pinochle, and canasta, including trips around Edmonton and out to Camrose for crib tournaments. Her hobbies also included golf, an investment/social club, and her annual casino-hopping birthday event.
Family gatherings were eagerly anticipated, as it gave her a chance to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Cards and games figured prominently at these events. All ages were included, and the younger ones were encouraged to learn and play as they grow.
Mary loved to have a good time and she wasn’t afraid to laugh at herself, particularly after dropping one of her many laughable lines – “Tranquilizers” and “You’re welcome” come to mind.
Mary had a life well-lived. Happy travels!
Cremation has taken place. The family will have a private gathering to celebrate Mary’s life.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral Home.
