Mary Andrews Obituary
Mary Andrews (O’Brien) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 9th, reuniting with her true love of 67 years, Mervin Andrews, who she lost on August 1st of this year.
Mary was the heartbeat of her family and leaves behind her devoted children Kathee (Cam), Keith (Susan) and Karin (Gary), her siblings Francis Monnot and Barbara Rumsey (Myles), her brother-in-law Newman (Marie) and sister-in-law Jean.
Of all her meaningful accomplishments and community connections, Mary’s greatest pride and joy was her grandchildren, who she called her “seven treasures”: Alyssa (Tommy), Laura (Ryan), Mikaila (Jean), Matthew, Andrew (Hayley), Emily (Liam) and Megan (Michael), as well as her two great-grandchildren, Fynn and Meadow. They are all heartbroken to lose their greatest fan and cheerleader, who they called “Maura”.
Born in St. John’s in 1940, Mary was raised by her beloved grandmother and finished high school in Denver, Colorado before returning to St. John’s, where she met her husband-to-be in Bowring Park when she was just 17 years old.
From humble beginnings, Mary and Merv built a beautiful life together with their children, neighbors, nieces, nephews and friends who they considered to be family — none more special to Mary than Marg Budden and Eileen Cole, who predeceased her.
Mary was an entrepreneur who owned the much-loved retail store Details and Designs on Water Street, where she valued meeting and building relationships with her customers more than making a sale. She also loved her work with the City of St. John’s as a senior’s program coordinator, and she was a passionate President of the YWCA St. John’s and national YWCA board member.
She also volunteered with the St. John’s Art Gallery and The Salvation Army, and in 2002 she received the Queen’s Jubilee Award for her years of community service.
Mary cherished her bridge groups, countless social gatherings and sailing the bays of Newfoundland with the love of her life and a glass of Pepsi in hand aboard their boat, aptly named Special K in honour of their children Kathee, Keith and Karin.
Mary loved a great party — especially hosting her famous Christmas Eve drop-in — and it is in this spirit that a celebration of life will be held at a later date when friends and family can gather together. A private cremation has already occurred.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Pleasant View Towers for their dedicated and compassionate care of both Mary and Merv during their recent time there.
