Passed away Tuesday May 21, 2024 at Huntsville Hospital.
Beloved husband of Elizabeth (Betty) (nee MacLeod) for 66 years.
Loving father of John (Shelley), Tim (Sheila), Bev (Allan May), Glenn (Pam) and Julie.
Much loved Poppa to Candice, Natasha, Joshua, Tammy, Katie, Curtis, Kyle and Mitchell. Great Poppa to Sage, Calebe, Brooklyn, Bella, Samuel, Alexander, Maryk, Nicholas, Dominic, Tatum, Jade and Ciara.
Marvin was born Feb. 19, 1934 in Ravenscliffe to Marion (Horsely) and Norman Martin. Survived by his brother Rolf (Lorna) . Predeceased by siblings, Don, Velma Reynolds, Allan and Rick. Survived by many nieces and nephews.
Marvin lived his entire life in Ravenscliffe and attended the Ravenscliffe school. In his early years Marvin played hockey with the Ravenscliffe Ravens. He also played lacrosse and baseball.
Marvin was a logger for many years and had his own log truck in the sixties. He also worked for Craig Olan’s Sawmill. Marvin worked in the bush most of his life, logging and cutting firewood. He was still cutting fire wood at 80 years of age. Besides logging, Marvin also hand crafted log homes.
Marvin and Betty had a busy life raising 5 children.
Marvin was a great guy with a deep love and appreciation for the outdoors. January 1st, regardless of how much sleep was had ,he and other family members were off ice fishing at 6 am to catch trout when the season opened.
In March, trees were tapped in the sugar bush as maple syrup season began. Marvin was a master at this craft. Syrup was meticulously made the old fashioned way. He has passed his passion of making syrup down to two generations. Marvin’s love of syrup making was a story featured in the Huntsville Doppler a few years ago.
Spring meant camping and fishing with Betty by his side. Many fishing trips were taken to Temagami, Emerald Lake, Gull Lake and Lady Evelyn Lake to name a few. Spring would also find Marvin planting a garden. Summer was a little more low key with tending the vegetable garden, and late in July and early August would find Marvin and Betty in the Matheson area picking blueberries.
Marvin really loved the fall as that meant hunting. He started travelling to Longlac in 1954 to hunt moose, and hunted there every year in the north, until 2018. Marvin always had time to talk about moose hunting. He loved watching hockey, baseball and listening to bluegrass music. He enjoyed all family gatherings especially as the family continued to grow. He was thrilled to be a Poppa and Great Poppa.
Marvin had a hearty laugh and infectious smile. He was a true gentleman who always had a twinkle in his eye. Marvin will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
As per Marvin’s wishes there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place.
