Mom left us to be with God and Dad on Friday December 30, 2022.
She passed listening to her favorite Irish and Abba songs after saying her rosary and with a prayer card of St. Patrick on her chest.
What can we say but, “What a life”!
After 97 years of hard work and dedication to her family and career, it was time. Her goal was to reach 100 but God took her ‘early’.
Maybe he needed the Best Mom, grandmother and great-grandmother he could find.
She raised her family to “look after” each other and anyone we encountered along the way. She would say “look after the greatest and the least.”
Maybe God needed the consummate nurse. After 54 years of nursing, she “retired” and went to live in the nursing home where she was once a Director. But to Mom she was still on duty until her last breath.
Maybe God needed the ultimate teacher. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse at Glencoe Station. She taught many nursing programs over the years, and taught at the kitchen table, religion classes, baking secrets, and taught many how to solve puzzles and play cards, giving some advice and life lessons along the way.
Or maybe God needed someone to add some fun? An actress, a pageant queen, a bingo player, an activist, a staunch liberal or a baseball statistician? Someone willing to try anything, motorcycle riding at 72 or golfing at 75! Someone who never said “no”, but always “we’ll give it a try”.
Where she got the energy and determination we’ll never know. Maybe her“rock solid” faith or being Irish and proud of it! Or maybe being one of 13 children, and having lived through some really hard times?
Either way, he created a woman who loved life. For that, we are eternally grateful.
Mom was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Archie A. and by her grandson, Isaac.; as well as her parents, May Jane and Joe O’Connor, and siblings, Babe, Buddy, Kay, George, Lloyd, Bonnie, Pat, Josephine.
She is survived by her 6 children, Geraldine (Garry), Sandy (Peggy), Curtis (Sharon), Glen (Anita), Warna (Henry), Morley (Charlotte) as well as 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Also her siblings, Betty, Gordie, Jake, and Charlie.
She loved her community of Creignish, her neighbours, and many friends.
We are especially grateful to the staff of the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home where Mom chose to spend her last days. You looked after her like she was your” Mom”. Thank you does not seem enough for your love and care.
Heaven has gained the best of the best.
Thank you for all the sacrifices you made for us.
We will miss you and love you always.
(The party is over Dad, Moms on the way!)
