Obituary of Marjorie MacDonald
The family of the late Marjorie Catherine MacDonald is saddened to announce her peaceful passing on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Willow Lodge in Tatamagouche.
Marjorie was born on April 3, 1928 in New Glasgow to the late Dorothy Colquhoun (McBain) and James David Nelson.
Marjorie was a life long resident of Pictou County. She grew up on her family farm in Millbrook and in her younger years, taught elementary school in Brookville. Following her marriage to Wilbert on October 11, 1950, they moved to St. Paul’s where they resided for eight years before moving to Lyons Brook. In 2017, she moved to the Willow Lodge Home for Special Care in Tatamagouche. She was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Pictou where she taught C.G.I.T. for several years and was a life time member of the MacGregor Atlantic Missionary Society of Lyons Brook.
Marjorie was a lifetime member of the Pictou County Artist Association where she enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow artists. She loved the outdoors which she shared with her husband and this was demonstrated in her artwork. She accompanied him on many hunting, fishing and drift wood search outings throughout the Maritimes during their 59 years together. Marjorie was an exceptionally accomplished painter, working in oil, acrylic and water colour. She was passionate about her art form. Her many pieces of beautifully detailed art were products of her personal photographs and sketches of scenic highlights from her love of nature. Marjorie belonged to the Blue Nose Rug Hookers often designing her own patterns for hooking. When she wasn’t painting or rug hooking she could be found baking family favourites, pickling and preserving, quilting, sewing, knitting fine cabled socks or working in her flower or vegetable gardens.
Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Wilbert Erwin MacDonald; sister Shirley Ethel Turner and brother Clarence Robert Nelson.
Marjorie is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Keith) Neily, Anne MacDonald (Paul) Martin, and son Nelson (Maureen) as well as grandchildren Shawn Neily (Erin Riley) and Breanne Neily; Bryan MacDonald, Alex MacDonald and Dylan MacDonald (Wendy Liu); Hannah Martin and Nathan Martin (Danielle Baillie) and great grandson Tate Martin.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dan MacDonald and the staff of Willow Lodge for their kind and compassionate care during her stay there.
Her family will receive visitors on Monday, February 26th, from 1-1:45 p.m. at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville from where her funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock with Rev. Bonnie Langille officiating. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or the Willow Lodge for Special Care (Palliative Care Room).
