Marjorie Robinson ( nee: Dingley ) Obituary
The Memoirs of Marjorie Esther Ruth Robinson
Born on October 6th, 1930 to Wilfred & Leah (Tonks) Dingley in Calgary, Alberta. They lived in a small rented home at 1626 Westmount Road. The family: Marj, her sister Dorothy, their mother & father moved into their newly built home at 1620 Westmount Road in the early 1940’s. She remembers the basement being dug out by a team of horses. Later she watched the cement wall being poured into the forms. Her great uncles Sam and Johnny Dingley came and helped put in the insulation in the walls which consisted of wood shavings with lime mixed in layers. Marj & her sister Dorothy were busy stuffing okum in the crevices and areas around the windows and door frames. The finish work; hard wood floors, door and window ledges and frames were all done by her dad in the evenings and weekends. Her mother had a twin laundry sink put in the kitchen and dad built the wood counters and cupboards. The home is still there today.
Marj attended BowView Elementary School to grade 6. She remembers a show called “Red Cap in Ferryland” that the school put on when she was in grade 2. Her sister Dorothy held the lead as the Queen. Marj said that she was one of the butterflies! Then it was on to Hillhurst Jr. High, Grades 7 – 9. In grade 9 they wrote provincial exams to pass into high school. Crescent Heights High School was Marj’s choice. She took part in the yearly operetta every year. During her final year she studied ½ days there and took music classes in Theory and Music History, also singing in the yearly music festivals.
During the summers of high school she worked at Jack Fair’s Photo Lab in the basement of McDermid Drug Store, learning quite a bit about photo finishing. Photography was her hobby for the rest of her life. Her dad and she learned how to develop and finish colour films at home and she had slides she took from wherever she travelled in her lifetime. At 16 she joined her voice teacher’s choir. They sang on the radio every Saturday morning in the Paramount Theatre for a Good Deed Club talent show. She had her chance as one of the soloists. A songwriter heard her and wanted her to record his songs. However, her teacher said no because he could get money from that. She could sing them on the radio, but that did not happen. Her teacher’s choir put on the operetta “Hansel & Gretel” and Marj sang the roll of the witch!
After graduation Marjorie started working as a civil servant for the air-force base next door to the army base and near the navy base Tecumsah in Calgary. She spent a number of years there in various positions including the flight tower of 4FTS when European pilots were trained to fly after WW ll. During this time she met Art her future husband. They were engaged by 1955. Art had another year in the forces so Marj left for Toronto where she studied voice at the Toronto Conservatory under Dr. Ernesto Vinci for a year. She lived with her friend Ruth Harcourt whom she had met while taking a vocal course from Dr. Vinci at the Banff School of Fine Arts the previous summer. While in Toronto Marjorie and her friend Ruth gave a musical concert in the town of Baltimore. They also had a recital along with a tenor and baritone at the recital hall of the Conservatory as students of Dr. Vinci.
By the summer of 1956 she left to travel to Florida to meet her Grandad Dingley and aunts and uncles and cousins. She crossed the United States and up the west coast by bus and went on to Vancouver Island where she and Art had a reunion after a year apart. She spent time visiting Art’s family and went home when her dad & mother drove out to get her. She & Art were married in Calgary at Hillhurst United Church on November 3rd, 1956. They moved to Vancouver where Art was working. They bought their first home later. Their three daughters; Julie, Helen and Donna were born in Vancouver.
Through the next years Marj sang in several church choirs, played the church organ and was always involved in the church women’s groups. She took art courses and started her next love of painting, including a correspondence art course for which she has a certificate.
Marj & Art celebrated their 50th Anniversary at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre in 2006. Family & friends gathered together to celebrate and congratulate them, but with the sad acceptance that their eldest daughter Julie was no longer with them. She had been taken in a vehicle accident in 1986.
A move to a new home in “The Terraces” in the north end of Nanaimo started another chapter for them. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in the Terraces clubhouse as an open house, with many neighbours and church friends stopping by.
She now used a digital camera and continued taking photos and printing some on her computer which she had learned to use in the 2000’s. After Art died, she went about cleaning out 64+ years of married life’s collections and tried to settle into a life without her partner. She continued to make good use of the computer working on the family tree which now had over two thousand names on! She enjoyed contacting family members previously unknown. With the help of her daughter Donna much of the collection of papers, slides, etc. were cleared away. As of 2023 she was very grateful for the loving help of both her daughters.
