Maria passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, on September 23, 2024, at 95 years old.
Maria led a fulfilling life. She was born to Alice and Andrea Chemello in Mussolente, Italy. She was the 5th of 8 children. She immigrated to Canada in 1952, working at GWG before starting her family. She and her husband founded Facchin Foods Co. Ltd., and together built one of the few pasta plants in western Canada, producing the well-known brand, Roma. Her hard work, determination, strong faith, and positive perspective helped her overcome many personal and professional obstacles. She was part of the vibrant immigrant Italian community, where she made many lifelong friends. Family was everything to Maria. She was very dedicated to her family and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren succeed and thrive. Her heart was generous and her vivacious personality and good humour made everyone around her joyful. She was full of life.
Nonna, as she was known to everyone, had a great passion for cooking “a la Italiana”. Food was her language of love. She was happy when she had her family around the table in conversation, enjoying her culinary skills. Over the years, she enjoyed aquasize, gardening, and using her knitting machine. She enjoyed travelling to Italy, Hawaii, and Mexico.
Maria will be lovingly remembered by her family: Annalisa (Doug) Baer, Michelle (Pam) Baer, Emory & Finley of Guelph, Giulia Baer (Neal Gallagher) & Maja of Calgary. Carlo Facchin (Linda Tyler), Amanda (Steven) Boyko, Carissa & Luke, Rachael Facchin & Emily, and Monica Facchin.
Maria is survived by her brother, Luciano Chemello of Edmonton, and two sisters, Gemma and Lidia Chemello of Italy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Thank you to the staff and aides at Riverbend Retirement Residence by Venvi for their kindness, compassion and wonderful care of Maria over the past year.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses of Orthopaedic Unit 3F3 at the University of Alberta Hospital for their three weeks of care and compassion.
Rest in peace sweet Mamma, Nonna, Maria, you will be forever cherished and loved.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Santa Maria Goretti Church, 9110-110 Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta, followed by inurnment at the Holy Cross Mausoleum.
