Obituary
October 1, 1940 – August 30, 2023
Margaret Rose Campbell, a mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all who met her, peacefully passed away on August 30th just shy of her 83rd birthday. She was listening to her favorite music, surrounded by close family and friends in the comfort of familiar surrounding at Sunrise of Erin Mills. Born into a long line of strong women in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland, she was the beloved daughter of Patrick and Clara Tarrant and the cherished sister of Cyril, Patrick, Alec, Gus, Ella, Carmel, Fluorina, and Madeline. Her childhood in Newfoundland witnessed the last Great War, the wrecks of the U.S.S. Truxton and the U.S.S. Pollux on Lawn Head, and Newfoundlanders’ vote to join the Dominion of Canada.
Margie will be remembered by her children as a shining light that illuminated, inspired, and guided them to lead lives as joy-filled and happy as hers. She was kind, determined, intelligent, glamorous, musical, and generous. Her infectious ebullience, curiosity, enthusiasm, and love nourished and guided her family like a beacon. She showed her family what they could be, what a well-lived life was, and demonstrated determined resolve in the face of every challenge.
Her proudest achievements were her three fortunate and grateful kids: Kenzie, Patrick, and Rhea; her grandchildren: Ryan, Hannah, Maggie, Nolan, Dylan, and Cruise; and her great-grandchild, Kaya. She loved her family deeply, and they loved her.
She was married for 60 years to her life partner, Peter Campbell, whom she adored and adventured with for almost all of her adult life. They led an exciting life of travel during Peter’s working years. Later in life, when Peter retired, they settled into the boating life at their favorite place of all, Georgian Bay.
Margie lived with gusto, leaning eagerly into every new adventure. She was a fashionista and entrepreneur who founded and ran a women’s clothing store in the 1980s called Maggie Rose. When she and Peter bought their boat, also named Maggie Rose, she became celestial-navigation certified so she could safely captain it alongside Peter, which they did for 21 fun-filled years. She loved to entertain, hosting guests regularly at multiple homes and venues: on the Maggie Rose, at her Georgian Bay condo, her downtown condo, or her Florida beach residence. She knew how to throw a great party, create beautiful platters of food, and pour wine like it was flowing from a bottomless bottle. She was fun.
Margie was a talented singer, winning a singing contest at the age of 18 in Newfoundland. She sang solos at her son’s and daughter’s weddings, stunning the crowds with her angelic voice. In later years, when verbal communication became more difficult, she would often break into song at her care home, delighting everyone in the room. She even sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to a 93-year-old resident at her dining table. She and her adoring caregivers, Tess, Julia, Rosalie, and Edita, shared a loving bond that provided her an active, rich life during the last year and seven months of her life in a care facility.
Her energy and spirit will live on in her family, who will forever be grateful for her presence in their lives. Margie made the world a better place simply by being in it.
What did Margie teach her family? She taught them that life is meant to be lived to the fullest, that kindness and happiness should be shared with all, and that we must forgive quickly and be kind to others and to ourselves. She believed that wine, delicious food, and beautiful music bring people together.
Margie will be missed by all who knew her, but most of all by her beloved husband of 60 years, Peter, and her three children, Kenzie, Patrick, and Rhea.
