Margaret Jean Watson (Smart) – born in Ailsa Craig, Ontario, August 2, 1933. The daughter of the late James Dick (J.D.) and Christine (McKillop) Smart, Margaret Jean entered into rest in her 91st year on September 17, 2023. Margaret Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband Dr. Robert (Bob) Watson, with whom she shared a full and adventurous life. Also predeceased by children, David (Survived by his wife Emma), Robert, and Ruthie, as well as her sister, Ann Nicholas. She will be dearly missed by her sister, Mary Eleanor Smart, daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Michael Forrester, Janet and Phil Porter, Sarah and Stephane Felten, grandchildren Zach Forrester (Sarah), Dustin Forrester (Ellary), Julia Forrester, Jessica Shea (Peter), Harvey Porter, Charlotte Porter, Eleanor Porter, Mathis Felten and Theo Felten. She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren as well as her great grandchildren Aaron, Emery, Nova, Rowan, and Ben. She was so very fond of her extended family: the Warners, Patches, Sheilds, Smarts, Readys, Charters, Istchenkos and their generations of children and grandchildren.
Margaret Jean’s enduring faith was nurtured first by her father and mother, Dr. and Mrs. J.D. Smart, and sustained over the decades through fellowship at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Her parents also instilled in her a real love and appreciation for music. She played the piano and organ beautifully, leaving family and friends with wonderful memories around the piano.
She thrived in the company of her friends and neighbors from Lindsay, South Ops, Bethany Hills, Morton Line, Peterborough, Toronto, Millbrook, Galt, and Fort Washington (PA). She created lifelong friendships through her involvement with Herefords, Belgian horses, exercise classes and the Ross Memorial Hospital. Margaret Jean was a long time member of the Fortnightly Book Club, valuing the intellectual stimulation and the companionship of her fellow members.
Margaret Jean studied Greek, Latin, and French at the University of Toronto, following which she spent a year in Paris, studying at the Alliance Francaise. This fueled her love for French and travel, which she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Although she was a teacher by training, she was a caregiver by nature, welcoming with open arms all who came for an afternoon visit or an extended stay. Despite claiming not to be adventurous, Margaret Jean engaged in endless wild adventures. She embraced all opportunities life sent her way and believed everyone should live life to the fullest. Margaret Jean was love personified. She loved her life and was deeply loved.
Visitation will be held at Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay on Tuesday, September 26th from 2:00pm – 4:00pm. and 6:00pm – 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 40 William Street North, on Wednesday, September 27th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Donations may be made by cheque through Mackey Funeral Home.
