Peacefully at the Souris Hospital on Thursday, November 23, 2023, Margaret «Bernice» McInnis (nee McGaugh) passed away with her loving family by her side. Born to the late Roach and Marjorie McGaugh on August 18, 1931, she was age 92 years of Selkirk, PEI.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Daniel McInnis and will be remembered as a caring and supportive mother. She is survived by her children Maggie (Paul) Anderson , Archie (Lynn), Carol (Tom) Lesperance, Danita, Jimmy and Brenda (Philip) Hennessey. Bernice was also a dear grandmother to 12 grandchildren; Melissa, Theresa, Geoff, Scott, Ellen, Anna, Marcy, Andrea, Mallory, Michael, Mia and Mason and 11 great grandchildren; Gage, Sarah, Allie, Ava, McKenna, Brynlee, Isabelle, Katelyn, Colin, Dani and Cam. In addition, she is survived by sisters Aileen (Earl deceased) Dwan, Fran (Francis; deceased) Stewart, Noreen (Jimmy) Kennedy and Anne ( Danny; deceased) MacDonald. Predeceased by sister Ethel (Frank) Todd, brothers Gene (Lucy), Colin and Sterling «Buster».
Bernice began her career at the age of 18 in 1949 as a school teacher in Selkirk. She entered the Air Force in 1953 as a flight control operator. She proudly served for 3 years before she made the move back to PEI to start her family and resume her teaching career. She traveled from Bear River to Selkirk via train as a teacher where she met the love of her life and future husband, Daniel McInnis. She continued to teach in Selkirk until 1972 when she moved to Fortune Consolidated School. She was one of the last one room school teachers. Bernice retired from her teaching in 1989. Bernice was a devout catholic, watching daily mass and offering her prayers to God. She was a kind and gentle soul who could often be found playing cards or hosting dinner days with her family. Her infectious smile and warm heart brought joy to all who knew her.
Resting at Dingwell Funeral Home where visiting hours will take place on Sunday, November 26, 2023 from 4-7pm. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, Monday, November 27, 2023 at 11:00am with interment to follow in the Church cemetery. If so desired, donations in memory of Bernice can be made to the St. Margaret’s Cemetery Fund or the Eastern Kings Health Foundation (Souris Home Care).
