Potvin, Marcel Raymond of Collingwood, Ontario, retired guitar teacher, passed away suddenly on May 3, 2024 at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital. He was in his 85th year. Beloved husband of Bonnie (Fisher) Potvin. Marcel was loved deeply by his children and their families. Cherished father of Michele (Peter) Chilvers, Jeannette (Rick) Vanovcan, Jim, Joe (Chrissy), Lisa (Brien) Johnston, and Step-dad of Amy (Stroud) Gilpin. Grandpa of Nicole (Rick) Corless, Elizabeth Chilvers, Adam Chilvers, Heather (Andy) Raynor, and Alex McLean. Step-Grandpa of Oscar, Freddy and Nell Wright, and Esme Gilpin. Great grandfather of Liam and Declan Corless. Brother of Huguette Payne and Joanne (Bill) Nolte. Pre-deceased by his first wife Bernice (nee McBride) in 1984, and his brothers Roger, John and Adrien. He was dearly loved by many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Marcel was a well-known and revered guitar teacher who taught in Barrie for over 55 years. For the most part, he taught in his home studio at 111 Mulcaster Street. During the 1970’s, while he and his wife Bernice were raising four teenagers, and he was teaching fulltime, Marcel decided to work toward his associateship in Classical Guitar – Teaching. He graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music, University of Toronto in December 1979, months after Lisa, their fifth child was born. Earlier in his career, he played in a jazz trio, jazz combo, a pop music band called “The Casual Soul”, and “The Bob Hunter Band”. Later, Marcel enjoyed playing in flute/classical guitar duos at weddings, being part of the Baytowne Big Band (Barrie), and more recently, Georgian Sound Big Band (Collingwood). Marcel loved fishing in Georgian Bay, specifically Thornbury, and more recently Collingwood. Marcel loved to laugh and was famous for his many one-liners such as “That’s why it’s called fishing and not catching”. Although he jokingly told people he did the gardening, in reality he loved walking around the yard, enjoying Bonnie’s flowers, and eating raspberries, cherry tomatoes, and snap peas. And, as long as Marcel and Bonnie were together, they were happy and content. Although Marcel’s song has ended, his music will live on!
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday May 11th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 63 Elgin St. Collingwood, ON. There will be a Celebration of Marcel’s Life on June 1st at 1:00 p.m. at Wasaga Beach United Church Hall, 380 Zoo Park Rd., Wasaga Beach, ON. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Wasaga Beach United Church would be appreciated by the family.
