Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our family’s beloved matriarch, Man Ching Sun on October 24, 2023 in Markham, Ontario, at the remarkable age of 100. Predeceased by her darling husband, Wei Sen Sun, Man Ching was the center of her large and loving family.
Man Ching was the devoted mother to the late Steven, Rosa (the late Carson), Joan (Larry), Marca (Sai Hea), Jonathan (Janice), Raphael (Julia) and Cecilia (Aaron) who all loved her dearly. She was also the proud grandma of Elaine (Alain), Christopher, Andrew (Wendy), Jason (Alison), Adrienne (David), Cynthia (Kendrick), Ambrose, Anthony (Jessica), Rebecca, Annette, Lea, Sydney, Matthew (Chen), Ian, Brandon, Jenny, and doting great-grandmother to Tyler, Alyssa, Cedric, Avery, Madelyn, Elliott, Abraham, Aiden, Ethan, Astrid, Luke and the late Abigail. Cherished sister to Pui Ching and caring aunt to her nieces and nephews, Man Ching will be deeply missed and fondly remembered in the hearts of many family and friends around the world.
Having grown-up on a farm in Southern China, Man Ching learnt the value of hard work from a young age and developed an astonishing array of practical skills, such as cooking, knitting, embroidery, sewing and more, which she resourcefully put to good use in Hong Kong where she moved as a young bride to join her hometown sweetheart and where she lovingly raised her 7 children. Due to circumstances beyond her control, Man Ching had very little formal education (with just three years of primary education and a few months of high school before the start of World War II), she nevertheless was a highly learned person with extensive knowledge and highly informed opinions. She wished she had been afforded the opportunity to stay in school longer and therefore always encouraged her children and grandchildren to advance their education and never take their opportunities for granted.
Man Ching was a motivated and capable autodidact who was quick to learn and master new things. For example, after relocating to Hong Kong, although her native dialect was Chiuchow, she quickly became fluent in Cantonese and with her entrepreneurial spirit was able to develop multiple small businesses, from selling quality clothes she handmade as a skilled seamstress to running a small shop, all while raising her big family. She even developed and flipped a several story addition to the family home within the outer edges of the now demolished historic Kowloon Walled City. Despite coming from a modest background or perhaps because of it, Man Ching was an excellent steward of the family’s finances and found ingenious ways to supplement the family income, thereby ensuring stability, comfort and a strong future.
An ever adaptable and resilient woman, Man Ching faced the many challenges of her life head-on and with a great sense of humour. While she acknowledged the hardships she faced, including during WWII, she was not one to dwell on the negative and would good-naturedly persevere through difficult times. She also knew how to enjoy the better things in life, including decadent family feasts often featuring her favourite seafood delicacies, especially shrimp and lobster. She was the life of the party and her infectious laugh will be sorely missed.
While one could hardly blame her if she had simply wanted to enjoy a quiet retirement and rest after a lifetime of hard work, not one to sit on her laurels, when Man Ching immigrated to Canada in 1978 at 55 years-old, she worked diligently to study English so that she could comfortably converse with neighbours and get around Toronto independently, ultimately being able to even read and write in the language. Man Ching had the gift of the gab in all the languages she spoke and with her outgoing personality easily made new friends wherever she went. For decades, she would go on daily walks in her North York neighbourhood and take other local adventures, such that she would consistently be recognized by community members whom she would happily chat with along the way.
Man Ching’s cozy North York home was a family hub where her many grandchildren made countless happy memories, especially around the dining table where many birthdays were celebrated, and in the verdant backyard, which had become a veritable mini-farm full of Chinese vegetables and other delights. Inside, her house was proudly decorated with family photos and many beautiful Chinese brush paintings that she had painted herself, a new and successful artistic endeavour that she had only taken on in her senior years after immigrating to Canada.
While it is impossible to outline all of Man Ching’s many achievements and the indelible mark she has left on this world, affectionately known as 女強人 (strong independent woman in Cantonese) to her family, Man Ching is best described with one word: superwoman. She lived her long and meaningful life fully and unapologetically, blazing a trail for her adoring children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will all miss her dearly and were blessed to have had her in their lives.
The family thanks everyone for their kind messages of condolence and for sharing memories of Man Ching that have provided comfort. If desired, donations in Man Ching’s honour may be made to the Yee Hong Foundation to recognize the excellent care received by Man Ching and her late husband Wei Sen at the Yee Hong Ho Lai Oi Wan Centre in Markham, Ontario.
Visitation is to take place on Friday October 27, 2023 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home at 211 Langstaff Rd. E., Thornhill, ON L3T 3Z6.
A Funeral Mass will be held in the Chapel of St. Joseph at Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. at 211 Langstaff Rd. E., Thornhill, ON L3T 3Z6, on Saturday, October 28, 2023 with interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
