It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Madeline Dorothy (Cook) Libbus on March 30, 2024 at the Richmond Villa in St. Peter’s, NS.
Madeline was born in Sydney on December 14, 1940 to Charles and Madeline (Brown) Cook and had ten brothers and sisters. She later moved to Lewis Cove Road in Grand River in her teenage years with her family and finished out her high school years in St. Peter’s.
She soon moved back to Sydney where she met the love of her life, Charles (Sandy) Libbus and they were married in 1958, they then went on to have five children, twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. They moved to Newfoundland for a few years for work and then finally settled in River Bourgeois in 1967. With her children growing up Madeline then decided to go back to school for business education, followed by word processing.
Throughout those years Madeline was a very active member in whatever community she lived in and was a tireless volunteer for many organizations. Having served on boards like the River Bourgeois Community Services for 12 years (10 of which she was president), Richmond Villa for 13 years, Kingston Memorial Clinic for 2 years, East Novability Persons with Disabilities for 5 years, RCMP advisory Committee for 2 years plus to many more the mention.
During this time Madeline’s work history was just as extensive as her volunteer work and she worked as Justice of the Peace for 15 years, Branch Coordinator for Island Alternative Measures, working with young offenders for 19 years, and was Richmond County Councillor for 12 years and Richmond County warden for 9 years, of which she was the first female warden in Cape Breton at the time. She was also the first female to serve a 1 year term as President of the Nova Scotia Union of Municipalities.
When she was not working or volunteering Madeline has many hobbies to keep her busy in her spare time and enjoyed travelling, camping with her family and just about any craft she put her mind to including, knitting, crocheting and quilting to name just a few. She enjoyed spending time with her children and adored her grandchildren, having them over as often as she could.
Madeline is predeceased by her parents, Charles and Madeline (Brown) Cook, her brother Charles (Bud) Cook and her husband Charles (Sandy) Libbus. She is survived by her children, Calvin (Kim) Libbus of Millville, Lavenia (Sidney) Hardiman of St. Peter’s, Melissa (Sandy) MacKay of Airdrie Alberta, Patsy (Rodney) Fougere of Oban and Lorena (Jason) Mann of Edmonton, Alberta and by her grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Jeffery, Tyler, Elliott, Duncan, Connor, Evan, Erin, Lexie, Jenna and Caelan and great grandchildren, Charlie, Patrick, Marley, Nora, Ian, Leah and Taylen. She is also survived by her siblings, Florence, Sydney, Zelma (Gerard), Grand River, Viola, Ontario, Zelma (Steve), L’Ardoise, Melvin, St. Peter’s, Kenny (Shelly), Grand River, Albert (Anne), Point Michaud, Calvin (Glenda), Grand River and Earl (Carol), Grand River.
A special thank you to the staff at Richmond Villa, for their care and compassion of Madeline over the last two year and to her nieces and all those who helped care for her during her illness.
